I know Kline in Trinsic is supposed to have dialogue tree to tell us about the mantra...
but can't seem to figure out how to activate that dialogue tree.

All I am getting is:

JOB? I seek entry to the Shrine of Honor!
Know ye the two requirements to enter and use the Shrine?
N: What dost thou think?
Y: What are they?

RUNE? A man named Winthrop knows of the Rune!

Just ask him about the MANTra. There often isn't a conversation tree with a given NPC leading to information they personally know, you're expected to find out that you need to ask them about something specific from another NPC. They won't necessariliy give you a hint that they know something themselves. Though in this case he does actually give a hint.

The entire coversation tree for Kline is as follows:
NAME: Kline
pronoun: He
LOOK: A searching paladin!
JOB: I seek entry to the shrine of honor!
HEALTH: Well.
MANT: The mantra is 'SUMM'.
RUNE: A man named Winthrop knows of the rune!
query: Know ye the two requirements to enter and use the shrine?
YES: What are they?
NO: What dost thou think?

That last question is actually the hint. The requirements are the Rune and the Mantra, and he's expecting you to ask about the Mantra once you have that information, since you've already asked about the rune to get that question.

Paulon: Just ask him about the MANTra.
It sounds like the OP is playing the Sega Master System version of the game, in which you can't just ask about arbitrary topics with people; you need to actually find a way to trigger that conversation before you can ask about something. This means you can't just go around asking everybody about RUNE, STONE, MANTRA, or similar things.

There's one other interesting characteristic of this version: Ranged attacks have finite range, but you can target anything within range, even if it's not on a straight line. However, walls will still block ranged attacks (unlike in the NES/MSX adaptation).

If t's a version specific different interface, I'd try asking around the town, in case there's a conversation with some other person setting a trigger which opens up the conversation, or if the version actually differs from the original game in who has the mantra. Unfortunately in the original PC version, the only clue to Kline having the mantra is the convrstion point I noted - no other NPC seems to point to him, or I'd suggest them as a start point.
I haven't played the SMS version, but I agree with Paulon. By the sounds of it, someone else in town or possibly anywhere in the world might tell you to ask Kline for the mantra. Or maybe it's triggered by an event like visiting the shrine or getting permission from Seer Hawkwind to seek enlightenment?
