suchiuomizu: Did a Shrine of Compassion quest too, just because it was close and got me one of the five missing dex.
Worth noting that shrines will only get you +4 to each stat in total, and that last +1 will need to come from leveling.

Since you're already level 5, if you want to max all of your stats in Ultima 5 without leveling down, you will need each level up to go to a different stat. This means that, if the same stat increases a second time from level up, you will need to reload from your last save (or level down) and reload the level; since whether you can level up when resting is RNG, this can get particularly annoying. (Also, if you level up without Lord British (by having enough XP after being resurrected), you won't get the stat point from leveling up.)

I believe I *have* maxed my stats in Ultima 5 without a transferred character, but it is quite tedious to do so. (Also, DEX is the most important stat in Ultima 5, since it affects how many turns you get, and the relation is quadratic, I believe, so 40 gives you 4 times as many turns as 15.)
I’ve got them all at 28 now, have done all the shrines so far except Spirituality, due to the moongates being more irritating to wait for the right phase in this one. But at Minoc now to wait for it.

Also went for my next favorite item while revisiting (after 4, not in 5) the various shrines, grabbed the Black Badge then made a visit to Blackthorn’s castle for the crown.

Though I have been getting swarmed in sea monsters. May hit at least level 6 before I make it to the shrine of spirituality. About ready yo steal the moonstone too, as soon as a clear out this horde. Would be nice if I could sell some of my growing boat feet.

Will get to 6 if British ever decides to give me dex for it.

edit: Made it to the Shrine of Spirituality and the Codex afterwards, but have to wait for the full moon to back to be done with the shrines. Finally got the level 6 dex though.

edit: Also did the last required thing on the surface that could be be done without visiting the underworld first. Played a lovely game of tag (or I guess, capture the ‘flag’) with the Shadowlords for the Sceptre. Also grabbed 5 glass swords, just to have them. At this point it is mostly waiting for the return trip to the Shrine of Spirituality before anything else.

Shrines are finally done, stats will be maxed at level 8 as long as I make to get the right last two bonuses.
At this point, I am just probably going to grind until the Avatar is level 8 before visiting the underworld, partial for the HP and 30/30/30 stats and partially to have the gate travel spell as an easy way out after getting what I need. When ready I will probably go Hythloth first, to get the mystics as well as the first shard.

Level 7 now, only int still needs to get maxed.

Mystic Arms/Armor and shard of falsehood obtained. Though now I do wish I was level 8 to get out of here. Mongbats and Corpsers are not fun. Had to make sure I was in mountains to deal with the one Mongbat fight so far.

Does blink only work one way sometimes? I used this map to get the shard and mystics, but it does not seem to work to get back to Hythloth. I am the part south of the swamp, trying to blink back east, but it keeps failing.

Edit: No idea if I was supposed to be able to back that way or not, but another route back to Hythloth. Worst case scenario, I probably could have kept grinding to level 8 down there. Also, I'm still carrying the Minoc moonstone, due to that mess with the Shrine of Spirituality. I could have buried it in the underworld to get out, but felt too weird doing that.

Going to have much less transfer exp for Ultima 6 it appears, though at least it will still be 30/30/30 and hopefully level 5 again. All the Shadowlords are down now. Grabbing British's amulet is last thing left that has to be done prior to Doom, and I'm still 300 exp from level 8. My other 3 have all been level 4 for some time.

Edit: Have the amulet, going down Destard to get it finally gave me the experience for level 8, but still still trying to get British to both show up and give me int.

Edit: Level 8 30/30/30 finally achieved and nothing left beyond restocking/possible grinding for Doom.

If you want to do this, you need to have at least 8000 XP at the time of transfer.

I actually wouldn't advise this in most cases, because:
* It's much easier to get XP in Ultima 6 than in 5.
* You can't level down in Ultima 6, so transferring at a higher level means fewer opportunities for stat gains (but your stats are already maxed out, and they transfer fully).

By the way, Ultima 6 has some nice little fun tricks you can do with spells, so you have that to look forward to.

Edit: Missed an important zero.

We'll see how much time I spend grinding for Doom, and how much more of the necessary 1,450 exp I get in that process. Cleared a path through Shame to open the way to that part of the Underworld, whenever I do get around to it. Might go through Despise (just to grab Captain Johne and dump him in a hotel afterwards), just because that is the only other part of the Underworld I haven't been in. May try to get the other three to at least level 5, since that isn't quite so painful.

Town's are at least much more pleasant to visit, except for still having to avoid the tribute demanding guards (which I avoid on principal).

Alternatively, you could try disobeying the guards and killing them when they attack. Guards are dangerous in Ultima 5 IIRC, but at level 8 you should be strong enough to handle them, particularly if you use magic (Charm, in particular, is *really* good in Ultima 5).

30 INT means that spells will never fail unless the target is outright immune, in both this game and Ultima 6. (Just don't get caught in the area of your own Mass Death spell in Ultima 6.)
Guards ripped me apart at least without charm, may try that later. Cleared a path to the bottom of Covetous, just because it was the only surface dungeon left where I hadn’t. That was just enough to get the other three enough experience for level 5.

Also since I had Johne, briefly grabbed one more character (Mariah) just to have a full party, to be able to have 7 Glass Swords. Before dumping the pair of mages at an inn. Now that British also showed to make the others level 5, may consider making the attempt at Doom shortly.

Edit: Now saved at the entrance to Doom, sleeping until British healed me one last time before going in, may give it a shot today.

But mages are the best (non-Avatar) class in Ultima 5; they get more MP, and class has no other effect except possibly affecting the probabilities of different stats increasing.
I considered that, if I wasn’t at the end of game and not wanting to do unnecessary grinding I might have included them. As it is, I’m in Doom, down to level 7 before finding the first really unpleasant room (dragons, and demons, with no barriers and the invisibility ring trick no longer working). May need to put some of those glass swords to use.

It is time to use the spells from your mages and then use the crown and pull out all the stops! This is it, the big battle, time to use all those toys you have been saving.

Have you tried Charming one of them?

(I believe it works on dragons, and as I mentioned, Charm is *really* good in Ultima 5.)
I was always very reluctant to take off the crown in any fight involving dragons/demons. I barely made it through that fight, used up all of the 5 or 6 time stop scrolls I had, hit the dragons and some of the demons with the glass swords. Even then, in the end only the Avatar survived the fight with what was initially on screen, between the surviving demons and sandtraps. Was not thrilled to have to take off the crown several times to get the wisps to appear (another usual trick that didn't work, unable to hit them behind the walls with the morning star).

I won, stepped back into the hall to resurrect/heal and sleep for regaining mp. That was almost a final boss fight, certainly more trouble than Mondain/Minax/Exodus. The few rooms that had to be fought after that weren't so bad (though the room immediately after that, with dragons and sea serpents wasn't pleasant either). Ultima 5 is now done as well. After Doom (which thankfully could be saved, unlike the Abyss), the Avatar has 7,471 experience. I'm slightly tempted to see if other skipped Doom rooms can get it to 8,000.
