Just to be sure I get this right, as an owner of a boxed version of Torchlight 2 that never was registered at runic.com. I now have just a depricated version of the game and no chance to get it here?

According to the announcement you should be able to reclaim your game:

Together with Runic Games, we're giving out DRM-free editions of Torchlight I & II to everyone who owns the game directly through runicgames.com – to redeem your copy, visit GOG.com/reclaim and enter the product key provided with your runicgames.com purchase.

Maybe you have to register with Runic first?
From the GOG Reclaim page:

2. Is every game code redeemable here?

Only select game keys are redeemable. You can find the complete list of supported games and editions on the right. For Torchlight and Torchlight 2, only game keys that were purchased directly from Runicgames.com can be redeemed. This DOES NOT include Steam keys.
It seems the way this works is that you require a game key in order to get a "free" copy here. If your boxed copy came with some sort of code it would probably (I'm just guessing here) be a sticker in the CD case, printed on the back of the manual or printed on the CD itself.
Again, I'm more or less guessing here and you might not like this, but if you bought your copy of Torchlight 2 from a local store there's a chance that it won't count as "only game keys".

What you could do is buy the GOG version of Torchlight 2 now (for 1/4 the usual price) and sell your boxed copy via eBay (other sites are available). If you end up earning some extra cash, it might even be worth the effort.

Well now it says loud and clearly that only keys from runicgames.com are egible. That information was missing yesterday.

So basically they just ended support for those versions of the game, while anyone who bougt it at runic has still access to a supported version and everyone else can basically kick it right into the trash. Way to go. Especially for a game that was advertised with no online enforcement. I payed good money for this. And I wonder what they are afraid of? That people buy the boxed version and redeem the Keys, wich would be cheaper for them? Well then maybe they shouldn't sell the game at that price point. They basically screw over anyone who bought the boxed copy and resellers. Giving "DRM free" a mocking undertone.

First things first: After reading your post I looked up the whole deal at the source (Runic) and found an article they wrote about changing their system, etc. The very last sentence is "Physical retail copies are still fully supported." Looking at their article about How to update to the latest version Steam, GOG, Humble Store and PS4 are listed, but physical retail copies are missing.
So there should be a way for you to update your game, but never having purchased Torchlight II, I can't tell you how. Maybe there's an update button in the menu, maybe it's a separate program that's somewhere in the Torchlight II folder. If you can't find it at this point, the best thing to do seems to Contact Runic's Support.

Also: I want to say I believe you that they updated the information later than they made the announcement. ( I found that sometimes it's just nice to hear that others don't question every single thing you say... ;) ) GOG really have to work on their timing when making announcements and updating stuff accordingly. I've seen games missing from sales, claiming free games not working in certain regions and festive bugs that can only be observed on special occasions. But... There is always something wrong when you're working with something that's constantly updated. The faster the beats, the more likely someone will miss a step. And most of the time stuff gets fixed. I'm not saying you shouldn't blame them, but you should blame them to their face. Barely a day goes by where I don't write a ticket to support and more than half of the stuff I report on got fixed so far. Some stuff wasn't fixable in time... Other stuff would require redesigning of features. But everything landed on the tables of staff members who can fix it. (And obviously some reports were just me making mistakes.)
I'm sorry for rambling there...

Either way: I hope you find a way to update your game and keep having fun with it. And when you found it you can share it here with us, to help others. ;)

Well the retail game has a launcher for updates, that displays a news Stream, with the current news beeing, that you shall move over to gog or steam as this launcher is no longer supported. In the end it is just the same thing you get at runic, wich they no longer support.
