My kids loveee this game and I'm so thankful I was gifted it by a new friend here. However, my kids would like to play with a PC controller. Is this possible? Thanks in advance!

- Tim :)
Sorry but as far as I know using a controller won't work with Torchlight, not even using extra apps to bind keys will help.

The mouse and cursor location is critical to playing the game, so even if you could use the controller to move the cursor around it just wouldn't be playable due to the cursor movement either being to slow to react or to fast to accurately target things.

Thanks for your reply!

I should have made this a question to give you some more rep. :/

My problem was that I forgot the little checkbox when making this thread. I'm really sorry about that.
Don't know how to fix that either.

By now though, my kids have been getting use to the controls without the need of the controller.

Thanks again for your help my friend.

God Bless you and Merry Christmas,

- Tim :)
Maybe you should buy the Xbox 360 version.

This was a very generous gift to me. I never knew about the game until I signed up here and saw it, and I don't have an Xbox.

PC is my only option but thankfully there's not an issue here anymore. We're getting use to the controls. It's not so hard.
The main problem is that in order to do anything, like attacking a monster or picking up an item you need the mouse cursor. It might be possible to use some tool to map the analog stick of a gamepad to mouse positioning and clicking for movement and use the other stick to move the cursor, but it would be very awkward when you need the cursor for any sort of interaction. The best control scheme aside from the mouse would be something like the WiiRemote with the nunchuck extension: you use the stick in one hand for moving and the pointer in the other hand for clicking things. I remember when I first played Diablo (the spiritual predecessor to Torchlight) I found it quite awkward to walk and attack with the same input.

It is kinda awkward, that's why my kids were a bit thrown off.
A Wii remote for a PC? I don't know if they make those! Haha
That would be pretty neat though.

But it's all good. Thankfully, we're use to the PC controls by now.

Thanks for your suggestions, I appreciate all the help on this topic.

Now, how do we close a thread? :P
There are no Wii Remotes for PC, but it is possible to connect one via Bluetooth. Of course that's a lot of hackery and I can't think of any scenario where it would really be worth the effort. It's best to just stick to the PC controls. (What the WiiRemote does with the nunchuck is the same thing PC has been doing for years where the WASD keys move you around and the mouse is used for aiming)

Hacking a Wii remote would seem like more of a hassle.

I'm old school, so I ended up just telling them to get used to the PC controls! lol
I believe Joy2Key and Xpadder could map the movement keys to the left joystick and let the right joystick map to the mouse. However, the setup would be pretty awkward. I tried something similar for Diablo II and gave up on it pretty quickly (left stick emulating the mouse and A button mapped to the left mouse button). It was annoying to say the least, heh.

Ahh, ohh well. At least you tried, right? I ended up just using the mouse and keys. It's not so bad.
I played it for a little bit, and it's really not that difficult. Torchlight is a good game for sure.

Indeed. It is a great game. In some ways I prefer it to Diablo II (which to Diabl II fans just branded me a heretic, heh). I passed on Diablo III for the PC, but I did pick up the PS3 version and love how they adapted the game to work with a controller.

I've played a number of Diablo-style games on both PC and consoles. It's tough to pick an overall favorite, but I have to say Torchlight (PC), Diablo III (PS3), Sacred 2 (PS3 & PC) and Champions of Norrath (PS2) are definitely near the top of the list.

Thanks Flynn so much for talking with me about these games. I'm guessing they're by the same developer? I'm new to Torchlight!

Also, are the others games more kid friendly? My children love Torchlight!

Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

It's the predecessor of the Torchlight series.
