Before I start I think CD Project as Devs have a good philosophy in general with their games. My views on this game do not mean I hate the Devs. It is just my opinion.
Ok, I waited a loooong time before buying this game because the gushing reviews made me... suspicious. Finally, there was a sale and I bought it.
I`ve been on the game now for two solid days just about and I have to say I am... underwhlemed.
I have read many reviews on GOG of this game. Many. "Better than the Mona lisa!" "OMG! the best rpg ever!" "In 30 years I have never played a better RPG!!" All kinds of imaginative comments made. Someone even told me it was better than morrowind.
Seriously? Were these jokes?
I have played many rpgs from the Early Ultima on the Amiga to Baldur`s Gate 1 & 2 to Morrowind and its expansions (wonderful game) to Dragon Age 1, Dragon`s Dogma to Skyrim and I can say that the Witcher comes nowhere near to leaving these games in the dust.
The previous games had me invested right from the start and had me keen to discover what I needed to do next, they also gave me a huge sense of freedom. Heck, Morrowind landed me in the middle of nowhere and said, "Good luck!" and that had me WAY more invested than the Witcher 3.
Also, it just isn`t as enticing as the Witcher 1 or 2 either (yes I played them). Where`s the female nudity? Why is Geralt- different? Where`s that hard-edge, masculine "I don`t care" feel?
Geralt keeps being told what to do by haughty women who talk down to him and he doesn`t even give any lip back. He chases after a girl for some unknown reason - maybe for love. Who cares about being an actual Witcher? He finds her, then he`s off chasing another girl again for some obscure reason out of loyalty or something, a girl we find who is super-uber good anyway (now we have a Mary Sue Geralt version in this game) - So why?
What happened to the independent Geralt who was in it for some girl booty? Where`s that "we don`t care" 18 rated feel the previous 2 Witcher`s had?
A few hours into this I was getting bored, but I soldiered on- for many hours more. Wandered the world a bit...Oh, it`s a bit more opene. Surely it will WoW me soon? Did a few minor quests, some interesting but over quickly (I played on the 2nd to hardest level by the way). Wandered about some more, rowed on a boat. Saw a palace. Oh, now I`ve got to help some noble woman who had a baby...
Boredom threshold being reached...
Yes, the graphics are admittedly very impressive, but graphics alone is not enough in an rpg, in fact it should take a step back for the rpg.
Finally, I couldn`t do any more, out of sheer boredom in the middle of horse riding, and went back to my rerun of Dragon Age.
I don`t know if all those gushing reviews were planted, but I simply do not see the greatness in this game at all. It is nothing compared to Baldur`s gate 2, Morrowind, Dragon Age, or even Dragon`s Dogma - even modded Skyrim entertained far more and I wondered everywhere, refusing to use Fast Travel.
More importantly, it`s lost that vigor that the Witcher 1 and 2 had- it feels like it`s trying too hard to please women. I may be wrong, but something is missing with this Witcher.
Sorry, but it just isn`t that good. It`s "OK", but that`s it. Maybe it`ll get better, but I just can`t be bothered with it, maybe in 6 months I`ll try again.
