Before I start I think CD Project as Devs have a good philosophy in general with their games. My views on this game do not mean I hate the Devs. It is just my opinion.

Ok, I waited a loooong time before buying this game because the gushing reviews made me... suspicious. Finally, there was a sale and I bought it.

I`ve been on the game now for two solid days just about and I have to say I am... underwhlemed.

I have read many reviews on GOG of this game. Many. "Better than the Mona lisa!" "OMG! the best rpg ever!" "In 30 years I have never played a better RPG!!" All kinds of imaginative comments made. Someone even told me it was better than morrowind.

Seriously? Were these jokes?

I have played many rpgs from the Early Ultima on the Amiga to Baldur`s Gate 1 & 2 to Morrowind and its expansions (wonderful game) to Dragon Age 1, Dragon`s Dogma to Skyrim and I can say that the Witcher comes nowhere near to leaving these games in the dust.

The previous games had me invested right from the start and had me keen to discover what I needed to do next, they also gave me a huge sense of freedom. Heck, Morrowind landed me in the middle of nowhere and said, "Good luck!" and that had me WAY more invested than the Witcher 3.

Also, it just isn`t as enticing as the Witcher 1 or 2 either (yes I played them). Where`s the female nudity? Why is Geralt- different? Where`s that hard-edge, masculine "I don`t care" feel?

Geralt keeps being told what to do by haughty women who talk down to him and he doesn`t even give any lip back. He chases after a girl for some unknown reason - maybe for love. Who cares about being an actual Witcher? He finds her, then he`s off chasing another girl again for some obscure reason out of loyalty or something, a girl we find who is super-uber good anyway (now we have a Mary Sue Geralt version in this game) - So why?

What happened to the independent Geralt who was in it for some girl booty? Where`s that "we don`t care" 18 rated feel the previous 2 Witcher`s had?

A few hours into this I was getting bored, but I soldiered on- for many hours more. Wandered the world a bit...Oh, it`s a bit more opene. Surely it will WoW me soon? Did a few minor quests, some interesting but over quickly (I played on the 2nd to hardest level by the way). Wandered about some more, rowed on a boat. Saw a palace. Oh, now I`ve got to help some noble woman who had a baby...

Boredom threshold being reached...

Yes, the graphics are admittedly very impressive, but graphics alone is not enough in an rpg, in fact it should take a step back for the rpg.

Finally, I couldn`t do any more, out of sheer boredom in the middle of horse riding, and went back to my rerun of Dragon Age.

I don`t know if all those gushing reviews were planted, but I simply do not see the greatness in this game at all. It is nothing compared to Baldur`s gate 2, Morrowind, Dragon Age, or even Dragon`s Dogma - even modded Skyrim entertained far more and I wondered everywhere, refusing to use Fast Travel.

More importantly, it`s lost that vigor that the Witcher 1 and 2 had- it feels like it`s trying too hard to please women. I may be wrong, but something is missing with this Witcher.

Sorry, but it just isn`t that good. It`s "OK", but that`s it. Maybe it`ll get better, but I just can`t be bothered with it, maybe in 6 months I`ll try again.
i know this was your opinion and i respect that, but just give the game a chance. don't rely on others opinons of the game, cos it can get your hopes up too much. there is quite a bit of female nudity in the game if that's what you're after, alot more action, some great fights and some very interesting and fun quests.
Your whole "review", which it isn't, smacks of pre-conceived bollocks. Go away, read the books, then put away the pre-conceptions and try again. I mean, seriously... Dragon's Dogma has a better story and characters than TW3?

You, sir, are completely and utterly missing the entire reason this game won so many awards.

About the jokes, you have to understand them most of the time. For example geralt will find the longclaw, game of thrones. he will coment things about not being a dragon breeder, Varys is also arund....
Theres also an unicorn rolling gag till you do jennefer... in a room.. with an unicorn...

About that girl... seriously ? Seems you dont know anything about the witcher, in case you forgot ciri is the adoptive daugher of geralt... and alas happens to be the most important being in the witcher universe..

Horse riding is annoying yes, but how many hundred of little side quest do you think the game has?

so whatever.. go buy mass effect 4.
It's okay... That's your kind of taste. But you can't deny that a lot of people - professionnels too - are blown away by it. Maybe, you should progress...

Those "professionnels", as you say, gave ME3 a 9.5/10. If that was their only transgression.

While I am not OP, I can state quite plainly. Witcher 3, in many regards, slaps hardcore fans of the previous games and the books in the face.

There is no arguing that Witcher 3 is a great game, and CDPR, while having their issues, one of them revealing that when it comes to lying, they can do it with the best of them (downgrade controversy) is one of the best devs out there. However, certain lack of attention to detail, lack of consequence and an utter disregard the root material (books) is treated with at points, makes my blood boil.

The way characters from Witcher 2 are handled, many not even appearing, is one thing. The other is how the characters from the books are handled... and they are, not to mention names, washed out of their depth so hard, almost the only thing left is their names.

Adding to that, the fact that the game is laughably easy due to the alchemy self-refill... Well, I will be hard pressed to not say that I feel certain things were changed to fit the "Call of Duty" crowd.

That is however, my speculation... Which seems to hold true.

Witcher 3 needed more time. I can almost feel how hard was the endgame rushed. How details were overlooked in the heat of the crunch and incoming release date.

I, however, wasn't there. Guess we will never truly know, but from what I've seen... I cannot find another explanation for it.

It is quite possible Witcher 3 needed another year. Or year and a half.

Frankly, I've been with Witcher games from the very get go, and WItcher 3 felt like a disappointment. Still feels like it. Curse of number 3 strikes again, I guess. But that is me. Too many people bought this game for my opinion to matter, even if I had a crowd behind me.

Hopefully, we won't see CDPR falling further from their "Making money to make games" attitude, if they were already not engulfed by "Making games to make money".

But that is enough me talking, I shouldn't speak of this, really. Only makes flamewars go higher.

Yeah, hopefully we won't see CDPR giving away any more awesome, free DLCs. Hopefully, we'll see them buckle under to the EA way... /sarcasm

People only see what they want to see.

Indeed. They only see what they do want to see.

Because we can't go down the list all the things Witcher 3 was supposed to have... but didn't.

Because disregarding previous installments isn't something that Witcher 3 does...

Because being streamlined to the point of laughable unblanace isn't something that was done to appeal to the lowest common denominator...

Because the entire downgrade controversy was totally not "Oh, please, we didn't lie like Ubisoft did with Watchdog's vertical slice, we the good boys, we only downgraded the graphics and blamed youtube compression until launch."

Please, I don't know which is more brilliant. The irony of you saying it. Or the fact that lack of serious criticism will make CDPR go the EA way.

Look at the developers. How many of them were there from Witcher 1? Most of them left. To work on their passion projects. There is a possibility that something is rotten in the state of CDPR.

Or, that I actually paid attention and listned to what the former and current devs had to say.

One of the two. But please, do disregard geniuine concern and, rather sound, I'd say, critique of the piece. See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.

What can possibly go wrong with that.

Nothing, after all, Bioware still does makes damn good games, doesn't it? Fallout is still in hands of Interplay...

Oh, wait.

If you have something to say against my predictions and arguments, say it. Otherwise, don't waste my time. I had mixed feelings about even getting in this discussion, even though I am rather at odds with most what OP had to say.

What can I say, at least he titled it in a rather, well, not really to the point, but still more exciting way than normal.

The only person wasting your time here is you.

ME3 was horrible, in every aspect... And I lost my interest after ME2. So, if you say ME3 is a downgrade, you are right. But, you really can't compete that stiuff with a title like Witcher 3. It simply does not fit!

By the way, that's youur opinion, but it simply does not work with a "overwhelmingly positive" on Steam...

I don't think so. Tha's a forum and he can say whatever he wants... But you, and me, we do not have to like it. - Kind regards!

Besides, Witcher 3 - from my view - is the best thing ever made.

He accused *me* of wasting *his* time. That is not possible in a forum. If he doesn't have the time to spare arguing, he is quite free to spend it elsewhere. Like I said, the *only* person wasting his time here is him, by participating in an argument he appears not to want to be in. It's not rocket science.

No, it's not... Time is such a precious thing. It is all about niveau. - "It's not rocket science." ; )

Have a good one.

Greetings

I can't disagree with you. Witcher 3 is not a "Rpg".

Rpg - Role playing game

a game in which players take on the roles of imaginary characters who engage in adventures, typically in a particular computerized fantasy setting overseen by a referee.

I originally thought that "RPG" stood for - Role Playing Game, but the "Role" as a dice role.
Basically any game that had in-game dice rolling. Instead of the role of a (character).
And I presume that most people make that same mistake.

Nwn:

You are a student in a academy. From the start *you*, the player, can choose Who-You-Are.
No one in the game will tell you who you must be. Of course all the good guys want you to be good too.
But *you*, as a player could become anything you wish.

Eye of the Beholder 1, 2, & 3:

Gather a party to fight evil.....cool & simple.
But this plot simplicity is overshadowed by the amount of combinations that can be done.
Take only fighters, or only mages. Have a party with only elves....and then rip your hair out when they die (they can't be resurrected). Take a lonely paladin without any help. Etc etc etc.

Daggerfall:
In my opinion........better then any other TES.

The emperor wants you to perform a task for him. Your ship crashes. Next, you are in a cave....Escape!!!
But you know what? You can show the emperor a middle finger and forget about his task. Run to the nearest city, buy a house, or a ship. Buy a horse, or a cart. Explore dungeons, or sit in your house and read exotic books.
Find vampires, get bitten, and then wake up as one.
The same with werewolves.
Join the fighters, the mages, the temple monks, the thieves, the assassins, and more.
You will receive letters from the emperors spy to return back to your duty.
But once again send them all off.
THE GAME WILL NOT PUNISH YOU. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. BE ANYONE YOU WISH.
Be good and valiant. Be evil & cruel. Be a-n-y-o-n-e.

--------------------
Witcher 3

You are a witcher. (Lover of witches, and hunter of monsters)
...............and that's were it all ends. You, the player, are a witcher. PERIOD.

Witcher 3

Gives you a great character "class" system.

Be a sword fighter with swift, but low damage attacks that will make you foes bleed.
Or with slow, buy high damage attacks that stun your foes. (And break through their armor.)

Be a mage. Wield magic that will crush & push your foes. That will mind control others to do your bidding.
That will slow your foes. That will protect you from unfriendly blows. hehe

Learn the unique arts of alchemy. Make any of your attacks devastating. Make your health regenerate during a fight.
Etc, etc................etc.

But those are classes. Play styles.
You can't change your "role".

Planescape Torment

Is a RPG.
And has the greatest plot, that any game had.
There are some minor things like path finding issues. Combat sometimes, doesn't work properly.
And for those who don't enjoy reading. They won't like PT.

Tolkien, Moorcock, and Pratchett. Have a great writing style.
The story in PT, is written with the same level of detail. The same drama, humor, and action action.
It wasn't boring reading PT. Thanks to it's book like reading gameplay. I as a player have more gameplay/choice options then any modern AAA game made after PT.

Back to Witcher 3
After playing Witcher 3 more than *4* times. I can say it still is very interesting.
I was never bored by it. But I will never have the same feeling when I played for the "1st" time. Back in the 2015 when it came out. 3 years have past, *3* years, and nothing from 2016 - 2017 can be compared with it.
Yes, I agree once again. It's Not An RPG. It's a Action, Adventure, GAME. With an unique class/play style system.

Comparing with PT.
Witcher 3 has less option in choice/dialogue then PT.
But has the same impact. Lets take for an example:

Dragon Age 1, ..............................2 ,........&.....3.

DA 1
Dialogue like in old RPG's
Good combat
But a linear story.

DA 2
Dialogue - Bad
Combat - Downgraded for consoles = BAD
Story - Worse story ever

DA 3
Dialogue - okay...ish
Combat - To many effects during combat.....unbalanced.....altogether bad
Story - okay.....ish

I believe that the one reading this will understand what I'm saying.
Witcher 3 = Not a RPG - But a Great Enjoyable Game
But when I do something in Withcer 3, It has an impact on the world of the game and on me the PLAYER.

When I did something in the DA series.
It was only for the loot & xp.

In Witcher 3, I did something because I cared for the character. That I know is just an animated 3D model.

Planscape Torment, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Eye of The Beholder. They are all a RPG.
