cloud8521: how much extra memory is it giving your video card (visible on dxdiag)
oh, haha, well that explains a lot. dxdiag 32bit and 64bit are both reporting 751mb total memory, even though my video card has 1gb of VRAM. If I use GPUz program it reports the correct memory, so it is just DXDiag misreporting and that is what the tool must be using. DXDiag is also not showing how much extra memory it is giving my video card.

Honestly the only thing that really matters is graphics card, and a gtx 425m just isnt up to scratch.

It sees 749mb, but my guess it is getting that info from DXdiag. Seems to be a common issue with the 6850/70 where DXdiag reports the wrong info. So I doubt the Witcher 2 is only using 749mb of my memory, which is probably why I can play at high with all setting other then uber, or Ultra with some other features turned off.

i have already released my criticizes of the auto settings feature. not everyone should have to play with the settings to make it work.

Dxdiag on Vista and W7 reports total VRAM available to the GPU, without making the distinction between dedicated and shared VRAM. This frustrates software that is trying to make a judgment on whether you can run the game, or whether it should try to load the largest textures. Since dedicated VRAM is usually much faster, this can result in sub-optimal performance decisions.
I get about the same as eisberg77 when using the performance tester. Although it reports only 705 mb vram for me. Using GPU-Z it says 1024 mb, which is what it should be. This is on a 6750m by the way.

What I also find puzzling is that the performance tester reports me having only 4 gb ram when I have 8 gb installed. Anyone know the reason for that?

If you are using a 32bit operating system, that would be the reason because 32 bit does not see or use above 4GB. However if you are using a 64bit operating system, then I can only assume that it is the same problem as DXdiag/Witcher performance tester with the VRAM on video cards.
Using 64bit Win 7, so it should not have any problems recognizing all of it. Dxdiag states that I have 8 gb, but only 707 mb for the gfx card (which, as I stated earlier, should have 1024 mb)...
Sort of frustrating knowing that it doesnt recognize the full specs of my computer :p

fmm: "425m is well below minimum spec"
That's sort of confusing, the game shouldn't detect my system as being able to run the game on high, and also http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ should not give me a pass on everything. Also considering the fact that this pc runs some pretty hardware consuming games like crysis (1 and 2) on 1600x900 with high details, you'd expect it to be able to at least run this game in low to medium settings. If this is really all the performance i can squeeze out of this system, then I'm really disappointed in the way this game is optimized.

"What happens if you run Furmark? Does it reach a stable temperature, or overheat? "
Stable temperature, as with all the other games that i mentioned.

It's a damn shame...i have been waiting on this game for a long time. I'm not a gamer, i only buy games as presents for my little bro to play on his computer and only test to see how they run on my laptop but every once in a while i play RPG's that get my attention (mass effect 1 and 2 and the first witcher are the only games i played in the last 5 years) Looks like i'll have to wait for Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 2 ran with all the details maxed out with not a single twitch so i don't expect to have the same problems with the new one like i have with Witcher 2 :)

Have fun playing it guys. Thanks for all the replies and the info. Cheers
Dude I hope you see this reply before you dump your laptop in the garbage.
I have a 425M as well and I also have a solution for you:

REDUCE THE RESOLUTION.

There, now go and enjoy the game.
why do people insist on playing this demanding game with gpu meant for hd movies like blue ray? and crying on this forum when they can't play?
