I used aard on him when his shield was down. Then runaway wait till vigor replenishes, repeat.

set the difficulty down to easy, it will be a cakewalk

true but I want to challenge myself. I think I will have to load up an earlier save and drink some potions.

totally understandable...well my suggestion: buy a lot of daggers and bombs(grapeshot or samun)10-15daggers and 2-3 bombs should work fine. Remember throw daggers and bombs after his shield is down, otherwise you're just wasting ammunition.

If you mean the first encounter with him, I also had a very hard time. I found that it's best to corner him, using blocking and strong attacks while keeping him against the wall. If he knocks you on your ass with a sign just go up to him again, otherwise he'll start bombing you.
Do a search for "letho". You'll find roughly a billion threads with good tips on how to fight him.
Do you use dodge-roll? I find that to be pretty good to avoid his bombs and signs.

I used Yrden to trap him and beat him from behind (if he is trapped) until he is able to block again. Then rinse and repeat.

The mods need to just sticky a few threads:

"How to kick Kayran's ass"
"How to kick Letho's ass"
"Triss is hot"
"I am bad and throwing a temper tantrum over the video game (also, I can't read)"

Any other oft repeated threads that deserve a sticky?

crazy. I tried this battle like 20 times, but then I became lucky and beat the battle in minutes.
I just used Aard when he lost Quen, then pummeled him with 2 strong strikes before blocking and hitting him twice more. I drank potions for health and vigor regen before the battle.
it is actually fairly easy when you get a good technique going.
I managed it on normal, even though I did consider dropping it to easy.. this guy was a headache.
I don't get this!

Now if you are all talking about the first fight with him at the Elven Garden, and right after we fell into the Pool area, I beat him in less then 10 seconds by just pounding at him with left-click and right-click and maybe one Igni and had him down to less then 1/4 health, then got a cut scene as if I had lost the battle, laying there in the corner and having him gloat about beating me. He soon went off and the game continued. And I was playing on Normal, so not sure if this is the battle all of you say is real tough or is there another battle (which I asume will be)? I also gcould have been very lucky?

I'm pretty sure you were really lucky. Letho doesn't just let you pound on him on Hard, I can say that much. My experience is that the only setting in which mobs don't actively dodge/block (hate block, as that leaves you stunned), is Easy. *shrug*
