Geralt never uses any ranged weapon in the books, not even throwing weapons. There is a discussion about Nilfgard throwing stars called orions (apparently inspired by Japanese shuriken), but Geralt dismisses them to be impractical and noisy.
Geralt makes a joke about breaking tradition. If it's that much of an issue, don't equip the crossbow. After all, it is a roleplaying game.

This game is after the books. Why Geralt can not use a crossbow? may be sometime he like it. And as silly said if you are straight just don´t use it.
"Pretend it's not there." is inherently a stupid argument.

It's not about what you decide to ignore, it's about crippling the unique lore of the world that the author of the book created. Witchers do not use ranged weapons because it does not fit to the style of fighting they are taught, they have witcher signs for that. It's pretty much one of their defining characteristics.

But I guess the console crowd demands another Assassin's Creed/Shadow of Mordor/Whatever clone.

The argument, "it's because consolez!!1!!" is also pretty stupid.

It has a practical use, nuff said.
Actually the worst bit is Witchers do not haggle, but in the game you can haggle. Now that is a major lore breaker :)
I'm still in w2 game, is the crossbow mandatory to carry on? ofr example you need it for a mission or something?
Regarding your indignation above, there's nothing in the game that breaks with or requires you to ignore the lore from the books. When Geralt gets the crossbow, he essentially says "wtf is this nonsense." He's right on point, because the crossbow is nearly useless.

I don't think there's any occasion where you are forced to use the crossbow. It is (as you would imagine) quite helpful vs flying enemies to knock them out of the air

It's also useful under water against drowners.

Yeah, it basically becomes a murder machine once it's submerged. How does that even work? I have no idea.
