It looks like I get my first quest before I even start the game!

I assume this is DirectX 9 or something, but can you even still get this version?

You can get this from Microsoft. The latest version is June 2010.

Offline installer (you can save and run it offline):

Web installer (you have to be online when you run it):

That did the trick! =D
I had the same problem yesterday and installing DirectX from June 2010 solved the issue.
I have a question about the DirectX install. It's asking me the specify the destination for the install, where do I install it? In The Witcher folder or somewhere else?
I just made a file C:\DirectX and had it extract to there.

So if understand correctly, I just create a new folder in C:\ and extract it there?
Yep. That's exactly what I did. Then you'll go to that folder, and there'll be the file DX Setup, and you install from that. Then Witcher'll be working like a charm. =D

Cool, thanks. I'm sort of new to modern PC gaming and some of this other PC stuff, so it really helps to have an awesome community like the gog users that know more about this than I do. :)

It doesn't actually install the files there, just unpack them. After running DXSetup and updating DirectX, you can safely delete that folder.
Thanks, I had this issue too, and this was a quick, easy, and accurate fix!
It worked! Thanks guys, this game is definitely something I was missing
got it working, thanks
