For future notice: If I remember correctly, this fix is now included in the download for TLJ. It can be found in a folder in the games folder, named Police Station Fix or something similar.

From my memory, I bypassed this bug by WALKING to the police station scene instead of RUNNING.
Running crashed every time, walking works fine when retesting.
FWIW, I played through the whole game on mac os Sierra with a self-compiled build of ResidualVM. The game is very nearly completely supported, and I would recommend to anyone who has the knowhow to give it a go.
Everything looks sooo much better with OpenGL AA and shading:)

First of all, I'm sorry to bump yet again this thread but as every other seem to redirect to this solution, I'll get along.
I've tried everything in this thread :
-Changed the preference.ini
-The compatibility (95/98/XP2/XP2/XP3/W7)
-Tried to check/uncheck the options at launch
-I've downloaded the "fix" "01.xarc"
-Etc
While the initial problem was the obvious Police Station crash, now, with the "01.xarc" replacement, everytime I get out of a screen : crash.
I tried the secondary route : crash. Even when I loaded an older save in a different location, the game now crashes when it didn't before.
Short story, the game now crashes everytime I try to exit a panel.
I'm sure the answer I'll get is to get the old .exe back and I'm fine with this, problem is, it won't solve the station bug.

EDIT : I've seen this solution somewhere else, since it worked for me I'll post it here too :
While I "Verified" the game and everything worked fine, I'm sure the problem of the crash came AFTER the Broadcast News cutscene. The solution that did the trick for me was to use the alternate route which is covered in the game guide provided in the GoG Goodies.
It appears that without this cutscene, there's no crash, so simply choose this way to enter the Police Station prior going to the "Crash Site" (it's ironic in the end) screen.

It's not too spoilery.
The only disadvantage of this method is that you can't return to the police station. So make sure you do everything you need to do while you're there the first time.
