I'm loving this game, but I'm stuck and have a few questions:

1. The fire elemental boss (Bolag?) is kicking my ass. My party keeps getting charmed, feared, etc. What spells can counter these effects? Also, are there any items I can make that can prevent this from happening?

2. Create wondrous items: what are the best to have? I know the main ones - strength enhancers for fighters, int for wizards, wis for clerics, etc. But not all of them have descriptions. I'm wondering if there are any awesome ones I should be using.

3. The extra content: I've browsed the forum, and it's supposed to be accessed through the blacksmith with the locked chest. Well, I opened that chest and he mentioned a book in it I could have. It wasn't there. I'm guessing the book leads to the extra content? Is this a glitch or am I supposed to do something else? I have no furthering dialogue options with him.

4. Is exp split amongst your party? The less members you have the quicker you gain levels?

5. Any other RPGs like this on GOG? I mean with turn-based strategy type battle systems, excluding Fallout.

Thanks
1) The balor can be a very difficult opponent. Don't bother trying to throw offensive spells at him, as his spell resistance will negate most of them. Protection from Evil/Magic Circle Against Evil will provide a good defensive bonus and provide immunity to most of the mind-affecting spells he uses. Resist Energy and Energy Absorption can be used to cut down on the fire damage caused by the balor and his efreet buddies, although he'll still be doing plenty of straight up physical damage in melee.

2) One that I found really useful was the Periapt of Wound Closure. The character wearing this becomes like a troll, in that without fire or acid damage they can only be rendered unconscious (they'll still continue to accumulate damage that must be healed, but they won't die). This can be great for frontline fighters when they're taking a beating, since you don't have to worry about resurrecting them (just heal them or wait for them to regen on their own), plus their unconscious body can still act as a distraction for enemies.

3) The blacksmith should have a dialogue option about "something different". If he doesn't then check that you're using the NC version of the Co8 mod.

4) Correct.

5) The most similar would probably be the Icewind Dale games. They're a little different in that the system is real-time with tactical pause rather than strictly turn-based, but it still feels pretty similar to ToEE. Same for the Baldur's Gate games.
Thanks for the response!

1. I managed to kill Balor by cutting my team in half - only my two tanks and my cleric approached him for battle, I left everyone else (ranger, wizard, and sorceress) way out of range. That way he never summons anything other than the two effrit at the beginning, which my fighter and barbarian make quick work of. I found the "heal" spell (6th level?) works really good at curing all status changes. After that it was just a matter of saving the game every round and reloading whenever my barbarian couldn't avoid his "slay living" spell.

2. That pariapt of wound closure sounds like it would have saved me a lot of headaches;) Thats the next thing I'm making.

3. Didn't really know what I was doing when I got that mod, maybe I grabbed the wrong one. I don't suppose if I got the NC one these savegames would work with it? I'm guessing not.

4. Eh, I really can't get past the real-time element of those games. I bought PS:Torment and a couple others and just couldn't get into them. The turn-based system is most of the fun for me, like this game, Fallouts, and Arcanum. Was hoping there were others in this vein on GOG.
Switching up the version of Co8 used in the middle of a game will only cause problems. You'll just need to view it as a reason to come back and play the game again sometime in the future.

As for other games along the same line, unfortunately party-based RPGs with turn-based tactical combat are pretty rare. As you mentioned Fallout and Arcanum do it a bit, although the tactical combat is a bit weaker in those. There are other games that do tactical combat reasonably well (such as King's Bounty and Fantasy Wars), but which aren't really RPGs. You could give the Eschalon games a try; although they aren't party-based they are solid RPGs with turn-based gameplay.
Thanks, I'll check it out.

Once I realized I didn't have the NC version, I just went ahead and finished the game (end boss was only thing left to do). Next time I'm gonna try with a 4 character party I think.

Here's hoping Larian's new divine divinity game (Original Sin, not Dragon Commander) can deliver.

As for the wonderous items, you can read the original d&d descriptions for the items, they're the same.

Other than the obvious stat boost items and resistance cloaks, certainly the natural armor amulets (stacks with worn armor, unlike the magic bracers). If you don't need to be using a belt of giant strength, might as well put on a vest of escape. If you have a monk then you want the monk's belt and the amulet of mighty fists. Wonderous items with a druid really lets you trick out a monk to be even more godly than they are naturally.

A lot of the really cool sounding items in the list are sadly of the 'one use per day' variety which I loathe. Great for metagaming if you know what's coming but the complete opposite of wonderous your first time through the game.

Realms of Arkania feature turn-based combat. The game itself is not played in isometric or similar view but fights are.
The same thing with the Betrayal of Krondor. You can't create your own party there, though.
Also Gorky 17 comes to mind.

Vitek:
Despite saying "excluding Fallout" I'm still going to suggest Fallout:Tactics.
Because it's pretty awesome as far as turn based games go. Or Jagged Alliance (2) if you can get into it.

Go back to the AoW forums Vitek. You're not allowed to play all my favorite games!

No, I don't think so. In fact I think it is you who is trespassing on my territory. So go back to your cell at once.
