when i first started playing this game, a newly created character was greeting early on by a pop up window which basically welcomed the character to the world and ended by mentioning that an item had been placed in inventory.

the item was some sort of tentacle which charged up over 10 turns and then could be activated to provide curing of a condition and healing of hit point damage.

the last few new characters i have created, mostly as a consequence of rogue-like deaths have not been granted this particular gift.

i'm curious if fact that the gift is only granted for a limited period of time, or if something else is at work (perhaps one of my characters has advanced enough to trigger a end to the gift).

any insight into this issue would be appreciated.

I've started 3 games recently and been granted it at seemingly random times & levels. Having never seen it before, I'm assuming the creator is sending it out as promo for the new expansion at some interval if you happen to be logged in at the right time like he does with the random extra dungeons, like the Bearscape.
It's a fun item given by the creator randomly with a Forbidden Cults theme. The Cog is a similar item for Embers of Rage.

You will notice some dungeons will work the same way. If you've seen the Bearscape or Lost Land of Poosh you'll know what I mean. Think of these as lucky events, after all it is a roguelike.
