Anybody know how to get SS1 running on Windows 98? I keep getting errors that make the game crash after starting a new game.

Before anybody says it, yes, I'm aware of System Shock Portable, but I have the original game on disk, and am trying to get it to run LEGALLY first instead of using dosbox and a pirated copy.
you will have to limit the memory to 16mb in the exe/bat properties, if memory serves. should run after that, but it kept locking up my pc after exiting the game when I've last tried.

just use SSP and you'll be good - as you have legally purchased the game, you are entitled to play it, and if the game on your disc does not work anymore, getting a working replacement is perfectly fine - just consider it as a patch that happens to include the game datafiles as well. there is no way anyone is going to take a legal action against you for doing this (even if you live in the legal bananastan of the world).

You can also use DOSBox to run your disk version; that's what I did, although I was using Windows XP at the time so there wasn't any other option for me. Still, it might be easier than trying to run it natively. Setting up DOSBox is not as hard as it sounds, and I'd be happy to provide further help with that if you decide to try it.

The one thing I'm not sure about is whether DOSBox itself will run under Win 98. Anyone know?

I'm wanting to run it natively, thanks. I want to run the hi-res mode with the toxic frog patch. When trying Dosbox, it's too slow at 1024x768.
many users have reported performance issues with the hires hack, even when running natively.
