JudasIscariot: I'll testify right here that using that OpenAL driver definitely makes a difference. If you want to hear it, just install it and do a speaker test. I am somewhat hard of hearing myself and I could hear the difference in sound quality when I installed that driver. Also, the link provided by Elenarie is 100% safe, in case anyone was worried as I installed this in my personal PC and am in the middle of souping up SS2 as we speak :D.

Elenarie: Any chance of including this in a new installer for the game, or maybe making the thread a sticky?
Will a sticky do? :D

Whatever you think its best. :p
So if I have a Creative card and I have this installed along with all of the other basic mods in the sticky, do I have to do anything else to get the EAX to work correctly? Anything with Alchemy?

No, just enable OpenAL hardware acceleration and EAX. This 2.4 version of System Shock 2 renders any custom DirectSound emulation like Alchemy obsolete.
The above statement is accurate as it turns out. Never mind my previous post, I had stumbled on the "hardware acceleration" option in the sound menu. It was flipped to "on" when there was another setting, OpenAL, that it wasn't apparent was available. I'm all set up now and have avoided ALchemy for another game.

So now comes the big question. Does this solution work in Windows 8? I'm using Windows 7, and am not yet sure how much further MS has deprecated accelerated sound support. I've heard that I can't even use a 3rd party tool to set my MIDI acceleration in Windows 8, which really hurts the audio quality of many retro games that I set up custom to use General MIDI just to avoid retro SB16 style instruments.

How to set up proper MIDI in W8.
Interesting software solution there. I've got an X-Fi sound card which has good quality MIDI out of the box, but only if one can force Windows or a game to use it. In Windows 7, that means using a 3rd party utility to change the setting. In Windows 8, that setting appears to be missing entirely. While this software solution is nice, what I'd really like is to simply force Windows to use my sound card (I have a secondary tool which can force set sound banks on my sound card if I really wanted to experiment).

Elenarie: I'll keep this hosted forever.
Until Skyfall right? eh? right?!?! Anyways thank you very much, this is incredible... I recently had to play on creative's site, its more of a Where's Waldo then a proper site. I avoid it at all costs now.

Until the clouds go away... no clouds = no place to put the data at. Because that's how cloud storage works! :D
Might be mistaken, but think this version is now included in the SS2Tool v5.1. Ofcourse if you're not gonna install SS2Tool then it's still relevant.

Elenarie: Hard to find, mostly because the guys from Creative after all these years, haven't really cared to update their website. Both links link to the same file. I'll keep this hosted forever. Spread the links (the file can also be found by searching my profile on SkyDrive). :)

Shortened link: http://sdrv.ms/ZnAlmZ

Full link (for paranoid people): https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=132E5D2A596EF0BC!804

Version: 2.1.0.0

Exact versions:
* OpenAL32.dll version 6.14.357.25
* wrap_oal.dll version 2.2.0.7
Edit: Nevermind, I figured out how to download it.

Correct. First post should be updated to reflect this.

SS2Tool v5.1
http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4141

Changes in 5.1
updated to NewDark 2.42
...
updated OpenAL DLLs (OpenAL32.dll 6.14.357.25, wrap_oal.dll 2.2.0.7) now get copied directly to the game dir, instead of downloading/invoking the installer
...
Right, so, 5 months should have been more than enough for GOG to implement this in their installer.

Delete / kill / whatever the thread.

Some of us could use this for other games or just to update their libraries though. Any chance of reconsidering? I could certainly use it
