<span class="podkreslenie">RPS ran an interview</span> with GoG's Rambourg and Stephen Kick, the guy who finally secured the rights. It seems to have been one hell of a ride to get SS2 here because of legal complications. It's not that they don't want to release SS1, they simply just can't.

But I guess a success of SS2 would give them additional leverage in future negotiations about SS1.
I also advise playing System Shock 1 first. It's also worth taking a look at System Shock Portable, a freely-available version of the original game that mods in mouselook controls and high resolutions. The mouselook will help a lot, because the original game has a really strange control scheme that takes a lot of getting used to.

[EDIT: Apparently GOG have stated that they don't want us to link to System Shock Portable. It's easy to find on your own though.]

I actually download SSP yesterday and played it a bit, and it was better than I expected! With mouse look it's not too clunky, and the interface is pretty handy, actually. It has a different feel than SS2, more UU-ish (which makes sense).

Gazoinks: I'd argue that neither of those are true. SS2 recaps SS1 at the beginning, and even without that it pretty much stands on its own. SS1 is definitely harder to get into, but the two games are different enough that it seems worth playing even after 2.

Yeah, I wasn't saying that you wouldn't miss out, just that SS2 does make sense for the most part on its own, and SS1 is different enough to still be pretty fun (though clunkier, ofc).

Do you have the mouselook mod?
I heard that the mouselook mod does not work for cyberspace, unfortunately. That means the controls will be very confusing. You should consult the manual, which should be easy to find on replacementdocs:

Since there's no real up or down, navigating cyberspace is kind of like Descent in that you can turn in any direction, as well as move fowards, backwards and sideways. You can also shoot at enemy programs with the mouse. I don't remember the exact controls though.
I found cyberspace so frustrating that I always play with it on difficulty 0 (invincible with 30 minute time limit). Your main objective is to collect objects which are either cyberspace goodies (like weapons) or triggers that affect the level outside of cyberspace (unlock doors, give you new logs, etc).

Mouselook works with it, but 'S' is move forwards I think.
Yeah I have the mouselook mod installed - is there a way to disable for it for just cyberspace then? It seems clicking the LMB moves you forward, though I haven't discovered a fire button yet. :S Will try and read the manual I guess. :p
E button should disable/enable the mouselook, if memory serves.

no, not really - mouselook makes exploring and item manipulation so much more practical, and I always turn it off when fighting (strangely, the combat feels more natural in the classic mode, being able to aim at particular parts of the screen).

I actually find combat more difficult via moselook mod than using the original controls - in the original, I could freely aim whereever on my screen without turning which just is a bit slower and more disorienting, I could use grenades, change power of a shot and reload without pressing the 'e' button etc.
I wouldn't consider using mouse look being "cheating" but I admit that I still like the vanilla sceme. I mean, the game was meant to be played w/o mouse look and if someday, GOG should release SS1, then please without the mouse look as they always wanted to give us the games we knew and how we knew them.

I did my SS1 Speedrun w/o mouselook and even though I master the controls very well, I often hit the walls here and then. short after my run, the mouselook got released.. damn! ;)

The main issue with the original control scheme is that it turned a LOT of modern gamers off playing SS1, regardless of what creators intended - and I do believe that the only reason why mouselook is not in the game is that it wasn't such a widespread feature back then.
