I have a pair of TRITTON AX 180 Stereo Headphones and when used with any other game/program that I've tried so far they function normally.

When I boot up System Shock 2 I get normal sounding menu ambiance and whatnot...
However in-game it becomes apparent that I'm getting mono sound through both speakers. Going into the AUDIO menu under options confirms this by clicking the 'Test Audio' button and hearing the "Left" and "Right" tracks equally as loud and equally as 'centered' (from both speakers).
If I simply unplug the headphones and click the test button a second time my computer's speakers function properly (Left on the left, Right on the right)...

Some 'Googlin'' did reveal an old forum post from someone having a similar issue with Thief 1 and 2, and there were even some suggested solutions, but the OP didn't update if he was successful in fixing the issue. I tried the suggestions that actually applied in my situation and no change.

It's not the biggest problem in the world, and I don't usually play with headphones anyways... I just wondered if there was a simple explanation out there, and if not, at least in a few years some other guy with the same problem will find this post and feel like he's not completely alone in the world.

*edit*
I'm curious if anyone else is using headphones with System Shock 2, and if they're experiencing any problems. I have a gut feeling that it's just that my headphones are borked. I've searched for updated drivers for them, but Tritton's site is less than stellar in this respect...

UPDATE

I got a different pair of headphones and there is no problem whatsoever. It must just be a bad driver for the Trittons... I guess they were on sale for a reason.

Have you tried the alternate audio driver in game - if available? On my system I have hardware and openAL as choices for hardware acceleration in SS2. It's possible using the other choice may resolve your problem.

Yes, actually that was the first thing I tried. No change in behavior, no matter what I changed. It only happens with the Trittons. I've tried two other headphones today and both of them work flawlessly regardless of settings.

Had the same problem with my headphones with virtual surround with my ASUS ST. Fixed the problem by changing the number of audio channels in the soundcard's software to 2 and then trying the different hardware acceleration options til one worked. Hope its not too late for you to go back and use your Trittons.

I can't recall if I had tried something like that or not... The next time I need to use headphones I'll pull out the Tritton set and see if that works. Glad you figured it out in your case, regardless :)
