Hi all,

We have uploaded a new patch for both the English and German versions of System Shock 2. This patch will install the latest version of NewDark which is at this time version 2.42.

Please keep in mind that if you have System Shock 2 with SS2Tool that this patch will NOT work with that version. Please ensure you download the latest installer for SS2 along with the universal update.

Please note that the German and English versions of the patch are two different files so please downloade the German universal update for the German version of the game ONLY and vice versa.

Have a nice day and watch out for those sneaky little psychic monkeys :D

let me rephrase that a little bit - if you are using the latest SS2tool, you don't need this patch, as your game is already up to date.

edit: to make it simple,

GOOD
install GOG version->install GOG patch
install GOG version->install GOG patch->use ss2tool
install GOG version->use ss2tool

BAD
install GOG version->use ss2tool->install GOG patch

if you did BAD, use ss2tool again, and everything should work again.

Thanks for the details on the update!
Great news. Maybe i'm bit late, but i take it as both party already reach an agreement to officially include the tool. Maybe the next sequel isn't far-fetched seeing the series is revived and still in high demands.
actually, because the tool contains a lot of files made by a lot of different persons, it has been decided to go the safer way and use just pure NewDark (as the docs explicitly state that NewDark can be used by anyone for anything, basically), to avoid legal issues.

so basically, if you want to "just play the game, nothing more", you can run the GOG version (with the GOG patch) right away. and if you want to tweak the game, or install mods, you fire up ss2tool.

Really though, they really ought as well include SS2Tool in the default install, there's no reason not to

Is there any advantage to keeping whatever version of the game I've already got (incompatible with the update) rather than reinstalling it with the newer installer and then applying this update?
if you have the default, unmodified GOG install, apply the GOG update. if you have patched up with ss2tool, don't do anything.

this would complicate things, for example, GOG and systemshock.org would have to synchronize each new release. plus, the tool is not really suitable for creating game packages for large scale deployment - it's meant as something each user should run individually.

trust me, the current setup is the best way of solving all the issues.

What's newdark? And what effect will having the latest version of newdark have?
it's the updated (new) Dark Engine = patch 2.4x for System Shock2. the last version adds some stability fixes, and full multimonitor support (among other things).
Would you guys be able to release a new dark patch for the thief games as well?
yes, it would definitely be possible to create a basic NewDark patch such as the one in this topic for both Thief games. T2 should pose no problem, however, the situation is a bit more complicated with T1 - as mentioned before, when using NewDark for the first game, we are essentially running T1 levels in the T2 engine. that means some things will work slightly differently - and while most players will not really notice things like small differences in AI sensitivity, some might not like it and complain - I did receive some heat from a couple of purist players when I have started to use NewDark in TFix. can't make all your users happy, I guess.

I still would recommend using NewDark for T1 as well - mainly because DDFix is at the end of its life/usability, and get's less compatible and more crashy with almost every new gpu driver release. the benefits (of using NewDark) simply outweigh the drawbacks.

will ask the GOG staff whether they are interested in switching both games to NewDark (in case they are reading this, they can also post here).

Ah I see well I can understand that. I do think nostalgia should be respected. For T2 if there is no difference except better options then the patch could be included as for T1 what if it was just an optional extra. It pretty much is here. You just don't install it, but I think it would be nice have have it included for hassle free installation.
Maybe I'm being very dense but I can't seem to find a changelog for this patch. I've not yet installed it because I'm not using any mods and not having any issues with the game, though sometimes the game freezes for up to ten seconds before showing loading screens or entering the Escape-menu. Sometimes the sound starts stuttering after entering the Escape-menu too many times in one session. Does the patch contain anything that might be of interest to me or should I play it safe and keep using whatever version I'm running right now?
the changelog can be found in the SS2 folder after you apply the update. for your convenience:

System Shock 2 v2.42 update
===========================

2.42 Notes
----------
This is a hotfix for v2.41 to fix broken multi-monitor support (which was made worse by the multi-
GPU and display fix in v2.41) and a pair of minor glitches. Otherwise this is identical to v2.41.

2.41 Notes
----------
This is a maintenance patch for v2.4. It fixes a handful of mostly smaller, but also some more
serious, issues. See list below. Consider v2.4 obsolete and do not use it any more.

Changes and fixes for v2.41
---------------------------

- fixed sky (non-)rendering bug when texture palette contained more than 246 textures
- fixed crash when using movie_disable/fm_movie_disable/movie_crop_exclude/fm_movie_crop_exclude config vars
- fixed bug with game dir write access test (gave false positives if game directory was assigned a custom icon in Windows)
- fixed issue with garbled HUD text on some older video cards
- fixed rare crash when using HUD buttons to change ammo type or reload
- fixed issue with crouching on crates
- fixed alpha calculation bug on scaled bitmap particles
- fixed bug with pendulum tweq stopping for angles larger than 32 degrees
- fixed issue with duplicate receptrons when added by a DML file
- fixed bug with force_ani_settings material flag not having any effect
- fixed crash when Corona property has no texture name specified
- fixed crash bug with "ForceCameraOverlayNormal" config var
- fixed song sound load failure if other format than in specified song file (i.e. if file is ogg but song file has wav)
- fixed crash when song sound file was not found
- fixed bug with display device selection on multi-device systems (probably picked the opposite device than the default/selected)
- fixed crash related to 4096 sized textures
- fixed walk forward bind in options menu, in patch_ext.crf, so walk speed is normal (requires re-bind to take effect)
- changed so horizontal and vertical mouse sensitivity is equal when "mouse_sensitivity_y_scale" is 1
- added "mouse_sensitivity_use_aspect" bind var to enable old behavior where horizontal/vertical mouse sensitivity differ based on resolution aspect ratio
- added support for RLE compressed BMP images (RLE4/RLE8)
- added localization support to FMSel (so FMSel UI can be translated)
- added FM language support to game and updated FMSel to make use of it
- added support for the original indeo5 codec (ir50_32.dll), may improve movie playback on slower CPUs
- added option to use enhanced ray trace for AI body/suspicious obj detection ("enhanced_aidetect_trace")
