The game runs fine, but there aren't any sound effects. I tried pressing F1 to enable them, but that just makes the game freeze for a moment.

I'm having the same problem. Music/soundtrack and gameplay are fine but no sound effects (using Windows 10)
Does anyone have any fix to this?

I managed to fix this by doing the following:
1. Uninstalling and deleting Syndicate folders from C:/Program Files(x86)/GOG Galaxy/ and C:/GOG Games.
2. Downloading the backup installer and installing the game as administrator using this installer.
3. Running from desktop shortcut as admin.
