I've just gotten to the fight with Legion near the singularity generator. Ava said to fire straight down the length of Legion to start a chain reaction in its interior. That doesn't work. I've tried a long range shot from 7 hexes, warping in to shoot it at range 1, and warping in to shoot it in the butt (but straight down its length) from range 1. In every case the only damage done was the basic 2000 points.

So, if it isn't against forum policy, will someone please take pity on a newbie and tell me how to kill the thing?

You've probably already beaten it by now, but yeah, it's not made clear but that's only for the plot (you'll see it after the battle). In-game you just need to keep firing at it normally. I'd recommend taking out the supporting units first, and make sure you keep everyone out of the red tiles. You'll get some big guns on turn 2, and on turn 3 or 4 both you and the enemy will get reinforcements which you can add to your arsenal if you wipe the enemy's out first. Then just keep shooting until it's dead.
