I wanted to express my disappointment with GOG in this matter. I can understand why an US company like Valve/Steam goes bonkers about some drawn nudity, but I don't see why an EU company would ever have a problem with that.


I wrote this assuming that GOG demanded the censored version to be sold.
I asked the publishers whose decision it was, to sell the All Ages version, and they linked me this tweet:

Asking, if they would sell the uncut version, if allowed by GOG, got unanswered.

I think the right move is to self censor and allow the user to install the missing content. Sunrider is a great series, but I can see how the explicit content may turn away some people. Blame it on American sensibilities for all I care.

And other things might turn away people from other cultures. Making a game as least offending as possible will just shallow the variety we can have. Not a fan of a dominating American culture and standards across the globe.

This is a European retailer and website and we could easily force our principles here, since we have a higher population than the US.

Perhaps I spoke out of turn. American culture isn't the only one uncomfortable with nudity. I wouldn't ever suggest games be made to not offend or to exclusively promote American values. In fact people should be offended slightly from time to time to expose them to things that might make them think differently. I digress, I don't think the nudity helps or hurts a very low visibility series like Sunrider. I prefer the uncensored content, but still I think the best move is to allow the user to decide to themselves to uncensor. They should make it more clear though if the game has cut content in the future though.

I don't oppose options. The more, the better. The standard should be though the original version, with an option to censor it for yourself. But I guess it isn't worth the extra effort, since it is easier to just use the Steam version with patch.

If a game got released on Steam with a 30FPS lock and there is free patch to unlock it, would you expect the same version here and argue "They can do the same here. Let the user decide."?

I'd rather if they sell the superior version and make the downgrade optional.

Normally I would agree with you, but adult content is more sensative. I know as a kid I could go through the extra hoops to install the adult content even now, but having a toggle in the game wouldn't be effective in the slightest.

Well, in that case an adult section with obligatory age confimation could solve this.

Users can download the patch and install it in about a minute. That one minute probably saves GOG from having to defend themselves numerous times from accusations of selling "pornographic" games. Their decision to sell all-ages versions of games makes good business sense.

And although Denpasoft doesn't guarantee their patches (made for steam) work elsewhere, they do just fine in GoG.

I don't think breasts would fall below the scissors, it would be rather hardcore elements (vagina, cumshot). At least that is how HuniePop got handled.

I, for one, am glad that I have the choice to play without adult content. I do not believe that it enhances the games in this series (unlike other games, ex: Saya no Uta).
That said, I do believe that GOG needs to implement proper age gates for games and DLC with “impressionable” content (gore, sex, and strong language). Games like Witcher 3 and Shadow Warrior (Classic) could definitely use these, and it would let them put Duke Nukem 3D back on the store due to German censorship laws.
