Do the Stronghold games support windowed mode or widescreen resolutions?

I ask this because my current monitor doesn't do full screen 4:3 games well. The top and bottom of the screen are cropped out and thus menu and ui features that usually appear in those areas are not visible.

As such, I prefer games that either support widescreen (16:9) resolutions or can be windowed without use of third party applications. I never have been able to get D3Dwindower to work properly.

If you search these Stronghold forums you'll find others have asked the same thing, and unfortunately the answer is that there is no native windowed mode, and it is a 4:3 game.

Some have used D3D Windower and other similar utilities, some have even set it up on a virtual machine and had the virtual machine running in a window.

However, from what you are describing, I'd be more tempted to play with the graphics driver settings. Some settings control the full screen scaling options and those may resolve your issues with fullscreen 4:3 games. What graphics card are you using and do you have the necessary control panel software for the drivers installed?

It isn't the graphics card. I have played with every setting I can. It is the monitor itself. (Using a 26" 720p tv)

I am using an ASUS graphics card with the GeForce 8600 GT chip set, though I plan to upgrade it to a GeForce 450 GTS soon so I can play Witcher 2. I probably need to update my drivers as well, but I don't think that will solve the problem.

Mine runs it perfectly at 1920X1200 (16:10) and the picture is NOT stretched or anything. Running a GTX 580, but my buddy has this on his 260 as well, several of us use GOG for older games and have everythign from onboard laptop cards to my SLI 580's.... I have seen NO problems with res and aspect ratio in Stronghold series. Infact most GOG games have no issues, closest thing to a "problem" I have seen was the letterbox type bars but on the side as some are hard coded with a fixed aspect ratio.

What kind of monitor do you have? Have you tried the "Auto" button on it? Sounds like an H-position / V-position issue to me.


Most monitors have an "auto" button that changes the screen's scale in order to fit the current program. Simply load the game and press it. This fixes most issues that I encounter.

If you can't see a button with this function, enter the monitor's menu and look for an AUTO function in there.

One thing, these options in nVidia Control Panel will NOT be available if the monitor uses an analog connector (e.g. D-Sub). In order to get scaling to work properly, a digital connector is required (DVI-D, HDMI, etc.).
