I know it is technically not supported, but is there a way to get SSZ to work on XP?

Same issue. It's XP hostile? That's bogus then; what a crock.

I think the game uses DirectX 10/11 which XP doesn't support, game page only lists Vista and above as operating systems. If it is, i don't think there's a way to get it running in dx9.

According to the Steam page, it uses DirectX 11, making it incompatible with Windows XP (and earlier Windows versions) due to Microsoft's business decisions.

Sadly you are correct. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Windows-8-DirectX-11.1-Metro-UI-Daniel-Moth-WARP,19062.html
They could get extra sales (and some happy customers that sadly already bought their game), by releasing a DX9 downgrade patch ~even if it cripples some of the eye-candy. Surely it's just the visuals that are DX11 dependent.

I'm not planning to switch to a new version of Windows; I'll switch to BSD or Ubunto first.

No need to "switch", Linux installs side-by-side with Windows and is free. There is no reason for you not to try it, and see how well SSZ runs in Wine. The Steam version doesn't work, maybe GOG does.
How stable is the DX11 implementation on Linux/Wine?
Hi, I'm a member of the dev team and will be keeping an eye on these forums (GMMan kindly ushered me in this direction from the Steam community forum).

In regards to Windows XP, I'm afraid we have no plans to make the game DX 9 compatible (it's simply not feasible for us to do so, we made the decision to leave DX 9 behind early in development).

That said, as we're porting the game to both Mac and Linux we are actually writing OpenGL support which might inadvertently open up support for Windows XP, but I cannot promise anything!

Regards,
Stanith
As Stanith pointed out, we're producing an OpenGL version for the Mac / Linux ports.

It's *possible* that we could release an OpenGL version for Windows that supports XP as a by-product, but of course we can't make any promises.
