Hi Dev (and anyone else who might know),

I noticed that when in space, scanning other ships only gives exp to electronics sometimes. I figured this out to be governed by the %Scan Quality. 50% and over gets Exp, under 50% doesn't.

1) Is the above correct?
2) What governs Piloting Exp? It is sometimes awarded when transponding or using FTL, and sometimes not.
3) What position gets Exp from refining? I see no movement in Salvaging or Mining from this.
4) Rare Earth Minerals - are they the result of refining or do they come neat?

Hugely enjoying the game, thanks for all your work.
1) In my experience (which is dated, as I'm not playing the current build), what you've noticed about scanning ships not always giving exp is correct... but I believe the issue is actually that you only get exp for scanning a ship the FIRST time you scan it. If you leave the sector and return, you may encounter the same ship again without information, and while scanning it will fill in the info, you won't get exp for scanning it again.

2) I've gotten EXP for piloting whenever using FTL or the transport devices.

3) I've gained a level in mining from refining, but it's REALLY slow. You have to do a LOT of refining to get a level... or if you've just been doing a lot of actual mining and are close to getting a level, the refining might put you over the top, but it's definitely associated with mining.

4) Rare earth metals are mined directly and can't be refined.

Again - take all these answers with a grain of salt unless the developer pops in with newer info, as they're from an older build.
Thanks for the reply Toccatta.

1) Even when I enter a new system (to drop a beacon for trade, and survey for mining drones), Some newly scanned ships give nothing. I have now confirmed that the Exp given depends on scan quality. 50% - 3Exp, 60% - 4 Exp, 70% (once) 5 Exp - all to Electronics. Perhaps the dev will tell us who is correct, if either.

2) I definately only get Exp for piloting about 50% of the time. Good that it can't be abused, but strange that we have differing experiences.

3 /4) As long as refining benefits someone, I'm ok with it. Mining seems logical. I was initially mining to get resources for crafting. I discovered there are three different ways to do this...
a) Mining lasers (time consuming but cheap)
b) Mining Drones set to Manual (at 1M credits a pop, expensive in the short run. Set to Auto for steady payback)
c) Trading for ore and Rare minerals. Just buy what you need.

Now that I have a Frontier CG-2, I use up to 6k space for ores, and 45k space for trading. I rarely bother now to trade for less than 1m credit profit.

Looking forward to story missions for bounty hunting and boarding. I will probably buy a heavy fighter just for those.

(Sorry for the ramble, but this game...)

Edit: 3b... Mining drones are 100k basic, not 1m. My mistake. Apologies.

Well, I can see three possibilities for the differences between your experiences and mine:

1) My experience with the game is from an earlier version in the development, and the way things work may simply have changed since the last time I played.

2) If your experience shows that some of the EXP is based on random skill checks, it's possible that the RNG gods were just more generous to me than they were to you - or perhaps that also has been tweaked in later revisions.

3) It's been a while, so I may have simply remembered incorrectly. In any case, I've downloaded the newest revision to give this game another going-over, as I distinctly remember it as being quite fun.

A million a pop for mining drones ?!?

Yeah, that's different than it was before. About a tenfold increase, as I'm pretty sure they were close to 100k before (adjusted for disposition). As to trading, ultimately crafting will give you better returns that trading (buying or mining raw materials and converting them into ship components), although it does require a bit more grinding to get the really high level (valuable) blueprints. If you can't stand a little grinding, you may find trading more rewarding anyway.

Well, I'm back into it again to see what else has changed. I can't wait for story missions either - but I understand the need to get some basic sand-box style game mechanics into the game before pushing forward with the story line. At least it's still playable (and fun) and us early-adopters not only get to see it as it comes along, but can make suggestions, which the developer has actually been listening and responding to.

Just edited my previous post. 3b... Mining drones are indeed only? 100k each, not as I said 1m. This price for me is currently 98k, probably due to Charisma.
