Hi everybody!
At the moment after the last actualization of the Windows 10 the Tie Fighter as the Xwing there is no music in-flight.
I've installed severals version of the file winmm.dll in the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\STAR WARS Tie Fighter\remastered
But it didn't work.
I've also modify the file winmm.dll inside the folder:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (after get rid out TrustInstaller which is a pain in the♥♥♥♥♥♥
But I modify this file then the game doesn't start.
Therefore, I'm wondering if it happens also to you? In this case how did you fix it? Where and what I have to modify and in which folders in order to have the music working in the last version of Windows 10.
Thanks a lot!

Khyron83: If you need a Version of winmm.dll which works with Windows 10 - go to this Github page
github.com/mohzy83/ogg-winmm and download it there!
Tested with SW Jedi Knight, but should also work with X-Wing or XWing vs. Tie Fighter.
where did you copy this dll?
In syswow64 or in the folder's game?

Thanks,

Final manual for dummies: (all this is to have music during flight)
- First:
Download vogons.org/download/file.php?id=27848 and extract everything to the game folder. Then rename winmm_nomciclose.dll to win32.dll.
-2nd:
download this program
hex edit
-3rd:
Use the downloaded program and open tie95.exe or xwing95.exe
-4th
find text (no hex) winmm.dll and modify it for win32.dll
-5th
open installScript.vdf (located in ....Steam\steamapps\common\STAR WARS Tie Fighter\) with notepad, delete everything inside and save it.
-6th (fix 3D acceleration)
Grab the first download from here
github.com/rdoeffinger/xwa_ddraw_d3d11/releases/latest
and extract ddraw.dll and ddraw.cfg to the game directory edit with note pad and in PreserveAspectRatio = 0 Fullscreen = 1
......\Steam\steamapps\common\STAR WARS Tie Fighter\remastered
-7th
enjoy & play and support XWVM in facebook!

I hope it helps

you sir, get a medal. this works like a charm (after a few attempts)

might be worth mentioning for posterity, that the ddraw.cfg default is PreserveAspectRatio = 1 Fullscreen = 0, those need to be changed to 0 and 1, as you mentioned. i missed/ignored that the first few times.

you may also need to right click on the tie95.exe, > properties > compatability and set the compatability mode to windowsXP-SP3 (your mileage may vary), i found it helps with the 3D hardware acceleration mode in game, and forcing AA on nvidia hardware.

bonus, the steps do work for the steam version, and are compatible with the TieFighterReconstructedGOGEdition.zip mod mentioned in other threads to add the remastered original music on both platforms (just dont use the included .exe in that one)

one weird thing, the steam version is prone to black screens with overlay tools (fraps specificially because its old and not maintained for dx11+) where the gog version isnt, but you can copy ddraw.dll, ddraw.cfg, libogg-0.dll, libvorbis-0.dll, libvorbisfile-3.dll, the modified tie95.exe (after it's been edited), win32.dll, winmm.dll, and winmm_mciclose.dll from the GoG folder to the steam copy and it'll work, as long as you launch tie95.exe directly from the folder, not within steam.

I am really surprised that people want to disable PreserveAspectRatio. Doesn't it bother you that everything has the wrong shape that way?
More importantly, please don't set Fullscreen to 1 unless you confirmed you actually need it. The only case I know that needs it is stereoscopic support with NVidia drivers. It is really a technical detail setting, not something that should have user-visible effects, except that the default setting allows for alt+tab to work better (and should be generally better tested and more stable).

It doesn't help... music, volume isn't clickable. Please help

UNSCJedi: This didn't work for me; it still crashes to the desktop as soon as I enter a mission, and says "XWING95.EXE has stopped working." Any idea what else I could try? I also tried deleting the game's original winmm.dll file, but that didn't help. This didn't happen until I downloaded the newly updated version of XWing from my account. It's really frustrating, since I wanted to get TIE Fighter & X-Wing Alliance since they're on sale today, but I'm not gonna waste money on something that doesn't work!

I tried this after downloading the most up to date X-Wing 1998 installer from GoG, but it still doesn't work--Crashes as soon as the game tries to launch a mission.

teleguy: Newer installers now include a wrapper (ddraw.dll) that doesn't support 3D acceleration so if it's enabled the game will crash. Disabling hardware acceleration should solve that.

Enabling 3D acceleration is a bit trickier.

First you have to download gerwin's 3D patch and patch the game. Then you have to delete ddraw.dll. That wrapper also emulates the mouse cursor and GOG disabled the game's own cursor so without the wrapper the cursor goes missing. To fix that start the game from the game's launcher and enable "software cursor".

Finally hardware acceleration has issues on some modern systems so you may need to use a different wrapper e.g. dgVoodoo.

In option.... can't select volume, music, master sound... isn't clickable... how to change it?
