m_kenobi: I'm on ATI Radeon here, and even though I managed to get to Spaceport level somehow, the Swoop Bikes are a real pain here. I don't expect GOG to do it for me, but how do I lower the FPS on an ATI Radeon by myself??
You can use MSI Afterburner (see above) , it works on any hardware.

If you have a Crimson Edition driver there's a built in frame limiter that can be activated in "Radeon Settings". Look for "Frame Rate Target Control".

For earlier driver versions there's a third party tool, Radeonpro, which is able to do that.

korell: If you think this needs changing then you need to raise this with GOG support and if they agree (or you provide evidence proving that it needs to be changed) then they may then release a new installer version with a new profile set at a 30 FPS limit.

Thiev: ...and the moment we do that, we'll get people complaining that the game is locked at 30 and should be 60 FPS instead. ;)
Profile changes are easy to do and I'd think that it would be better to leave 30/60 FPS decision to users themselves.
How do I change it myself? If that is the case can't their be a 30/60FPS option patched into the boot menu? I have no clue what kind of graphics card I have but so far I see no general solutions on here.
What I find strange is that I had no problems at all and the game played exactly as it played on my old win98 pentium II with a Matrox G100 (minus the crashes), even later when I upgraded to a TNT2 card the speed was always the same.

I wonder if it's just the PC version that's faster than the N64 version by default, Lucasarts was never a particularly good console developer back when they used their own developing teams instead of just handing out the license like they did when Lucas stopped ignoring them and messed them up.

MSI Afterburner is a general solution.
Ok, I didnt use any MSI nor anything else, but found out that I can pass the spaceport level without actually having to outrun them - you just gotta push them off onto walls until they explode. You should have more than enough time to do it to all of them.

You can't win the level by outrunning them in my experience, I did outrun them once and I lost the level anyway.

Thiev: but he could ride a speeder in the first movie? :p
avatar
korell: Yes, because that looks pretty normal for the scene. If you look at the cutscene where Luke is on a swoop bike, it just looks wrong to me. It's like he's trying to be some biker gang guy, which just seems jarringly out of place for his character to me. The landspeeders in the first movie were a normal type of transport for the area, like cars are for us.

EDIT: Here's a still from the cutscene in question:
http://customstarwars.freeweb.hu/sote/lukeskywalker_dash_rendar.jpg

Maybe it's just me, but something just doesn't look right about Luke riding a swoop bike like that. Maybe it is the seated position of the bike, or the bike's general appearance. It is like it is trying to say "look at me, the tough gang member type" which isn't Luke's personality.

EDIT2: Attached some images. First Luke in a landspeeder - looks fine. Next, Luke on a speeder bike - again, looks okay. Lastly, the image from the link, Luke on swoop bike - something seems off here.

Oh, and I had to log in with Internet Explorer to get the attach button to work. Trying to do this in Firefox (x64) didn't give me any file browse when clicking on attach. Never had that happen before as I've been using Firefox for a long time now.
LOL, I get the opposite impression.
I think he just looks like a guy who enjoys having fun with powerful engines, which is exactly like his personality, and his father's for that matter.
Like father, like son.
Most guys (and some women) who enjoy powerful engines also enjoy a variety of vehicles.
Did I see people talking about setting 30 fps with the nvidia inspector found in the nvi folder? - How? When I start the .exe in that folder, there's a green progress bar at the lower edge of the window, and when it's full, the window just closes. Can't set anything with that.

darthcloud64: I never play the game on PC originally, but to match the speed of the N64 version i've set the nvidia profile to 30fps.

That way the droid in first level stop bouncing up and down like crazy nad move more like in the N64 version.

60fps was still too fast.
That has been always the case with this console port. The PC release did run with 60 FPS on 3DFX hardware, instead of 30 and that doubled the speed of a lot of stuff when compared to the 30fps console version.

So not really an issue with gog. but rather the original 1997 release of this game. Capping to 30 FPS sounds still like a good idea even when you can do it at 60 fps as well. ^-^
hi all,

i've amended a directx wrapper to cap the frame rate of 3D at 30 FPS.

mostly for Shadows of the Empire!

might be of interest to some of you:

github.com/slartibardfast/dxfpscap/releases/tag/v1.0-release.20200719

largely written because I'm playing this on an overspec'd Windows 98 SE machine,
and can't use driver based solutions. 30 FPS seems to be optimal,
as audio doesn't clip and the end, and animations still appear smooth.

Enjoy!

I had the same problem but found the solution: you have to get the latest profile inspector from Nvidia. Then it won't crash anymore. Also, in addition to setting the frame rate to 30, be sure to also set Frame Rate Limiter Mode to "Allow All."

So I waited a few months to say anything in case Nvidia would fix this, but there doesn't seem to be any plan to walk back on this decision... The Frame Rate Limiter mode that was required to change the framerate on this game was V2, but it is no longer available in newer versions of the Nvidia driver, only V3 is.

Right now there is effectively no way to play this game in 30 FPS anymore, unless you fall back to driver 460.89, and use Profile Inspector 2.3.0.12. It's a real shame.

Maybe some 3D expert out there knows of a program that could offer a simple solution?

EDIT: RivaTuner works.

I found a solution that's good for Nvidia users, but I can't take any credit for it, all credit for this fix comes from "digitalclover" on Steam, who posted this in the comments of a Steam guide that was also about locking the game to 30.

Here is what digitalclover found out:

Go to the Nvidia control panel and go to "manage 3D settings," and then "program settings" and either find or add the exe for Shadows of the Empire.

1. If you have G-Sync enabled, set "Monitor Technology" to "Fixed Refresh Rate"
2. Set "Vertical Sync" to "Adaptive (Half Refresh Rate)"

digitalclover also said that for them these were the only settings they needed to change in order to get the game running at 30 FPS, setting "max framerate" back to "auto" still resulted in them getting 30 FPS.

Me personally I still keep the "max framerate" option set to 30 for extra peace of mind.

But yep this 100% works with the GOG version, I changed these settings, started up the game, and now the game no longer feels like it's running on fast forward. Funny enough this sorta adds to the nostalgia given I originally played this on N64 back in the day (where I think the framerate was somewhere between 20 and 30).
