teleguy: You can set a framerate limit with RivaTuner Statistics Server included in MSI Afterburner. It should work on any hardware.
That works great! Now I can run the game correctly. I've set it to 30 fps and now everything works as I remember it - even the droids don't jump up and down like maniacs anymore. ;) Thank you very much for your help!

You are using an nvidia GPU, right? GeForce 9400M. Didn't the Nvidia Inspector adjustment of the framerate work for you then?

In my case, the adjustment didn't work at all (I got an error message in the installation for that part). But as I understand it, the adjustment sets it to 60fps. Even before GOG included the adjustment, I had 60 fps. Now I play it with 30 and that seems just correct.

Yes, the GOG installation uses an Nvidia profile file to import into the driver profiles which sets the frame rate limit to 60 fps. But you can just run the Nvidia Profile Inspector executable (inside the NVI folder within the game installation) and find the Shadows of the Empire profile, then change the frame rate limit value to suit.

I don't know why you would get an error during the game installation, though.

Det_Bullock: This is very strange, I have a Radeon 7770 Ghz edition card and I don't have any problem with the GOG version.

Do other people with amd cards have the same problems or is it just Nvidia users?

Wolfram_von_Thal: On my other pc I use a Radeon 5950 and it's exactly the same problem, nothing NVidia-specific imho. How do the droids at the beginning of the first part of Hoth act in your version? Don't they jump up and down too fast? I think that's a good benchmark to see the problem. The game is playable with 60 fps, but it gets really brutal once you reach Gall Spaceport.
Went to Gall spaceport.
No issues to report.

Have you checked if it's a CPU problem?
Some old multicore CPUs can give problems on older games.

Thanks for your reply. As I said: It's a simple fps-problem and I could solve it by using RivaTuner Statistics Server and setting the fps to 30.

Wasn't forcing V-sync enough?

with vsync, it still runs with 60fps.

My experience was much the same, and a framerate limit of 30 (well, Nvidia Inspector gives options of 29.5 and 30.5, so i was using 29.5) fixed it.

I didn't really notice the probe droids bobbing speed as the first level was playably fine, though now having run it at 30 FPS I can definitely tell that they were bobbing up and down way too fast.

It was when I reached Gall Spaceport that I noticed my first playability issue. At the start of the level it was fine as the mountain path was uphill and level, or only very shallow downhill. Once around the other side of the mountain where you get steeper downhill paths, that was where I then experienced sliding, especially if I moved backwards or sideways onto the slope. I made it through somehow, and once at the spaceport area itself it was then fine again. Putting the 30 FPS limit in place eliminated the sliding to the point where I didn't even notice it. So much better to play.

I never tried the Mos Eisley swoop racing level at 60 FPS though, as by that time I'd already shifted to 30 FPS. I've heard many say it runs too fast to play that level at 60 FPS. At 30 FPS it took me two attempts, and that was just because on the first attempt I wasn't used to the controls and so didn't get the hang of it until they'd pretty much reached the end of the level, causing me to lose. Second attempt I was much better, though I beat them by banging my swoop into the swoop bikes of the gang causing them to crash. I've since heard that there is a kick option which I never even knew about. I think I beat them all before they got to the canyon section, too, as I remember having plenty of time to do it.

On a side note, I don't think the whole Luke Skywalker on a swoop bike looked right. I just can't imagine him riding a swoop bike.

but he could ride a speeder in the first movie? :p

Yes, because that looks pretty normal for the scene. If you look at the cutscene where Luke is on a swoop bike, it just looks wrong to me. It's like he's trying to be some biker gang guy, which just seems jarringly out of place for his character to me. The landspeeders in the first movie were a normal type of transport for the area, like cars are for us.

EDIT: Here's a still from the cutscene in question:
http://customstarwars.freeweb.hu/sote/lukeskywalker_dash_rendar.jpg

Maybe it's just me, but something just doesn't look right about Luke riding a swoop bike like that. Maybe it is the seated position of the bike, or the bike's general appearance. It is like it is trying to say "look at me, the tough gang member type" which isn't Luke's personality.

EDIT2: Attached some images. First Luke in a landspeeder - looks fine. Next, Luke on a speeder bike - again, looks okay. Lastly, the image from the link, Luke on swoop bike - something seems off here.

Oh, and I had to log in with Internet Explorer to get the attach button to work. Trying to do this in Firefox (x64) didn't give me any file browse when clicking on attach. Never had that happen before as I've been using Firefox for a long time now.

Actually the sliding was always there, I always had to be extra careful in the first part of that level.

I also did the swoop bike level on the first try, even though I didn't get any challenge points (but that's normal for me), it really wasn't faster than on my old computer.

The level was never meant to be a classic race, you always have to make them crash, I remember a few times when I reached the farm first but lost anyway.

Sincerely I wonder how may people here have played the PC version originally like I did, because until now I haven't found anything wrong with the game.

I'm trying to troubleshoot this game on WINE and while I think I've been able to solve the speed bug for this game, I'd like to see if I still have issues on the Swoop Bike racing level and on the Gall Spaceport level. Is there any chance you can send me your save file so I can see for myself?

Also, have you tried running this game with a utility like CPU Grabber in the background?

I've attached my save file (rename the .jpg to .soe). Alternatively, you could use the player name cheat to create a new save that has all of the levels unlocked. I believe if you create a new player save file named "R Testers ROCK" (without the quotes) then all levels will be unlocked.

I didn't use a CPU limiting program like CPU Grabber as the Nvidia Inspector framerate limit of 29.5 solved the issues for me.

I'm on ATI Radeon here, and even though I managed to get to Spaceport level somehow, the Swoop Bikes are a real pain here. I don't expect GOG to do it for me, but how do I lower the FPS on an ATI Radeon by myself??
