Why is there a "CD Key" field in the Settings program for Stalker:SoC?
Attachments:
The games on gog i own which require a key have listed it in the game shelf - lower left corner.
If I remember correctly, you only need the CD-key for online multiplayer.
There aren't any serials available on any of the three games.

I wasn't given a CD Key for any of the STALKER games on GOG. Do we have to ask GOG for the CD Key to play the game online?

So is the Settings Program wrong about the CD Key? I guess I'm confused as to why it has that field listed there.

I ment on my game shelf (haven't installed any of the three yet). It's entirely possible game require(d) CD key as do number of other GOG games. Usually you don't need one to play GOG games single player, only for multiplayer, if such still exists. Post here indicates the MP aspect is dead but to be on the safe side someone should inquire about it from support (as for some GOG games you need to ask support for your unique CD key).

Yeah, I didn't see any CD Codes automatically listed on the game shelf in GOG, so does that mean GOG does not have them ready?

No, for some games you have to request your unique (games usually have generic CD key put in place) multiplayer CD key so asking support is easiest way to find out. Thought I find it odd that GOG staff has made no mention about CD keys if they're still relevant.

You shouldn't need to enter a key. Select your preferred language, hit Save and Launch, and you should be good to go.

If something goes horribly awry, please do not hesitate to write to Support about it :)

I tried singleplayer mode and that works fine without a key. But is there a reason why the Settings program has a "CD Key" field in there?

I believe it's basically a harmless leftover from the DRM that used to be there. Yes, I know that at first glance it can cause a bit of a WTF moment but rest assured, we wouldn't release the game if it needed a key for single player :)
CD Key is not required to play the STALKER main game, it's just required for multiplayer (which is dead as hell and I, personally, don't find it interesting).

I remember installing the retail version and skipping the "Enter CD Key" part during the setup without any problems.

Yes. I believe regarding cd-keys you just ask GOG support and they hand you one. Not that it really matters since as someone else said the online is pretty much dead and also in my opinion completely boring.
Valid keys are required for joining multiplayer games, it does not matter if some consider it "completely boring" such opinions are useless and irrelevant.

Multiplayer is not only a part of the game, it is also an advertised part of the game, so expecting the keys to be provided is hardly surprising. Unless keys that allow access to multiplayer are provided it is false advertising and deceptive, which would be uncharacteristic for GOG.

I've had to contact GOG support before for multiplayer keys to games from GOG and received them without trouble, it may not be the best way to do it (or even good or efficient) but its been reliable so far.

Hi,

We are working on getting the CD keys for multiplayer and as soon as we get everything straightened out, you will see the key on your game shelf when you expand the box for the game and, thus, you won't have to contact Support for one. Sorry about the delay with the keys but rest assured we are doing everything possible to get them to you in a timely fashion.
