A quick question: where does the classic Spelunky keep its progress data? Certainly not in the game directory - I copied that to another computer and it was gave a brand new game.
I'd like to know this because I'm about to reinstall my Windows and I'd hate to lose my hard-earned shortcut...
I've made a backup of my Users folder, but I'm not sure if it's in there (I saw no Spelunky folder anywhere there).

I went ahead and reinstalled Windows... and promptly lost my Spelunky progress, despite restoring the whole backup. Oh well, time to collect 100K again... Or I'll just wait until I get the HD version and try my patience there.

Anyway, this means that the classic game doesn't keep its progress either in the installation directory or in Users; my guess is somewhere in the registry, though I don't know where because I searched for Spelunky yesterday in the registry and only found irrelevant entries (installation path, last run executables, etc.).
Classic version stores its saves in registry's Game Maker folder, more specifically: Game Maker/Scores/834524. Just extract whole folder, also don't forget to save your 'stats' file like I did when I was formatting my hard drive.

Edit: OK, I've just read your second post properly, but you still have registry copy, right? Anyway, new version is all around better game with substantially more content, I say this as someone who spend couple hundreds of hours playing the original.

Wow, that's a strange entry, but good to know, thanks.
No, I didn't back up my registry before reinstalling Windows (complete with partition formatting), so my progress is gone for good.
I'll probably get the HD version soon anyway, especially now with your recommendation.

You can also try the Spelunky Portable mod, which saves your progress to a file instead of the registry:

I used it for a long time and had no issues. I only recently got the HD version so I can't comment yet as to how they compare. I have noticed some sublte differences to the character movement that means I'm having to re-learn a few things, though.
