The game installed without errors, but when I try to start a new campaign or new game, it won't load. No errors: it just sits there.

I notice that no movies are playing at game startup, either. I get a blank screen with a mouse pointer, and I have to ESC past it to get the main menu.

So, I rebooted, and it worked. Go figure. :/ Never seen that particular behavior before.
Glad you got it working. Enjoy!
The game never works for me first time I have to close with Task Manager and then run again and it works fine, very odd behaviour anyone else have this.

I have the same problem:

When i try to start, i have a blackscreen. Nothing happens anymore.
Then i press "ESC" and the game can be started.
But when i try to load something, the loading screen just stops, where it is.
I tested, how long this can go on, but after half an hour i stopped the experiment.

I had a similar problem some time ago, at this time i uninstalled and reinstalled the game again and the problems were gone. But its not ok, always to uninstall and reinstall the game again, because i think, the problem will come up again. Isn´t there some bug fix around?

I mean, i can start a new game, but i assume, when i save again and try to load later, the same problems will be coming up again.

That sounds exactly like what I had. Rebooting cleared it up for me, though, and I haven't seen it since.
Nah. It got worse afterwards. I tried a few things (such problems seems to be an old topic), but nothing helped.
After i was very frustrated and was close to "I want my money back for this not-working-game" i found the technical help side on gog, where i tried the next things. Installing some CCP-drivers and putting the game in winXP-compatiblity mode then helped me to being able to play again.
I will have to see, if i will be able to load save games in future.

Edit: ok, even after one day playtime, no bugs came up again. So: thank you gog-technical-side for all the tips.

Hello. Sorry I'm not very good with posting and explanations, but I'll try. I had the same problem (black screen, and the game not loading saves or starting new game), so basically, unplayable.
I don't know if other people who had the problem had the same cause, but I can say what worked for me

I watched another thread about the game, and saw Stardock posting this link:
http://esupport.stardock.com/index.php?/default_import/Knowledgebase/Article/View/518/172/general-sorcerer-king-troubleshooting

In my case, it was "reinstall DX and vcredist. However, it said how to launch it from the --steam-- game's folder. And those 2 folders don't exist in the Gog version (at least weren't there for me).... The experienced user probably doesn't care, but for less experienced people (like me), it was annoying.

Go to Microsoft.com --> download.
This should be Dx10 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
This should be vcredist 2010 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555
For 2005 sorry, not sure if the site is bugging or if I suck (I'm not good with this), but I can't find a direct link. Anyway, you should find it there (developer tools). Just be sure to download it from Microsoft, don't go downloading .exe from random sites (or do so at your own risk ^_^)

(re)install / repair those files, restart computer.... problem was solved for me (the game still crashes and has tons of bug and balance problems which ruins a game that could be better), but at least, it's playable (as of patch 1.0.4, maybe it's fixed with the recent 1.0.5, I didn't try)

Hope it heled

Regards
