Sniskerbobberton: ...I'll redo them again...
Realistically you should include:
3KG2.XA
3KJ1.XA
3KJ2.XA
3KJ3.XA
3KJ4.XA
3KP3.XA
3KP5.XA

as far as the legality is concerned, EA had SimCity 3000: The Soundtrack available to download for free for years at http://simcity.ea.com/coolstuff/sc3k_music/index.php
Archived version of that webpage here: http://archive.is/iJdGY

Fairfox: No idea why 'SIM Broadway' was completely missing from teh CD... Space issue?
The *.xa music files from the original release of SimCity 3000 are all 22kHz 16-bit Stereo.
However, the above listed tracks are different on the SC3K Unlimited release (with the exception of 3KG2.XA, which as pointed out is completely missing).
They are all appended with an "M" at the end (ie. 3KJ1M.XA) because they are all 22kHz 16-bit Mono, which cuts their size approximately in 1/2.
I guess when the SC3KU CDs got pressed for distribution they needed the 35MB of space these changes gave them...

Sniskerbobberton: is there a big difference in sound quality between mono and stereo other than the difference in size?
If you run an actual speaker setup instead of headphones the difference is like night and day.
On my current and previous 5.1 speaker setups stereo songs come from the Front Left & Front Right (Stereo) speakers by default and can be put through Stereo Upmix.
That upmix feature lets the music engulf you in sheer aural bliss as it now emanates from every direction!
Sadly though, the mono tracks will only play through the Front Center channel and can't be upmixed.

Fairfox: Game Audio Player can be found here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/164521/160000/fileinfo/Game-Audio-Player
to get the SC3KU *.xa files to play in DAP you will need to hex edit them as described on the "SimCity 3000 Unlimited Music Conversion" page i posted previously.
a good free lighweight hex editor I've used for years is:
Freeware Hex Editor XVI32

Fairfox: Teh archived files 'drivetheory' linked are aaall broken, but teh music in MP3 format can be found elsewhere online easy enough - GoogleFu!
Yeah, that archive page is just there to prove/document that the music was given away for free.
...the SimCity.EA.com website was pretty great and full of useful information until the great culling that occurred a handful of years back.
SimCity

SimCity 4 Inside Scoop

Its truly a shame these knowledge filled pages are all likely lost to the sands of time...

Good guide, but every time you write 'teh' I want to kick a puppy.
For anyone who is too lazy to do all those steps to unlock the high quality soundtrack and unlock the hidden songs in the game files. I made a small Java SE program that does all of that for you. All you have to do is download it and install JAVA SE 8 Developers kit to run my Java SE Script, which can be found here
