Civ III - I own on Steam and box copy - but the system requirements are quite different between the Steam version and here - anybody know if GOG version works better than on win 10 64 bit then the steam one does these days?

Steam and GOG system requirements are copypastas since they game's requirements are actually lower than the minimum requirements for their respective clients.

That said, the GOG version is more stable since it did not receive the patches that the Steam one did, which replaced LAN and GameSpy with Steamworks but introduced some strange crashes and incompatibilities with certain hardware.

Thank you for info Plokite Wolf

Guys - based on what Piokite said I bought the GOG version as well. I have not used Galaxy since they went to version 2.0 - when I downloaded and installed the GOG Civ III it appears that Galaxy still wants to use the Steam version to play. How do I overide that without removing the steam version?

Thank You for any advice.

Sorry, wasn't pinged by your edit.

The solution is simple - right-click on the game card in Galaxy, then in the last option you see, choose the GOG version instead of the Steam one (attachment shows what I mean). However, I don't think you can have those two versions installed at the same time as it might cause a conflict in the registry files.

Thank you Mr. Wolf for both your answer and your tip not to leave both installed Bruce
Steam also has the labels.txt file which has some strange additions which plays havock with some mods and has to be replaced.
I go through it everytime I have to redo my install, and the text is all messed up if I do not remember to replace that labels.txt file.
more details about it if especially installing CCM mod over at CivFanatics wherr exact instructions on what to do if it happens to you if you bought Steam version

GOG version does not have that problem
