I'm wondering if the Gog version of the game will run in WIne. Previous versions did not (except for a native linux version) and I'm hoping this one will.

Could GOG get the rights to distribute the Linux edition? I think that the port was done by Loki. No idea who owns the rights to it now.

Your a step a head of yourself. First GOG would have to decide that they want to offer games on Linux. I've seen no sign of GOG going this direction.

People have asked the same thing about Mac. The closest GOG has come is this tweet from June 6.

We don't have any plans for Mac ports, but some of our users are running our games on Macs http://bit.ly/mRZx2i

If it so happened that EA got the rights to it after Loki's bankruptcy that would be fantastic. They don't need to support it, just stick it up as one of the extras. It's very expensive to acquire legal copies (occasionally comes up on eBay I think).
I have it launching in Wine fine, and am getting into game, but as soon as the sound for 'turn completed' plays, it crashes out. I'm continuing to tweak though, and if I find a solution I shall let you know.

You need to adjust the .ini to skip movies and run at native desktop resolution to get it to launch. If I can get it to run smoothly I'll post up full instructions.

Gets a no from me. Wine App database more or less reflects it as being a total failure to get it to work with wine. Old Linux version is more or less the only hope hope for running it though I have yet to try it.

...

Looked into the old linux version and I don't think it is in any way viable for this version. Looks like Windows only for this one, but anyone feel free to prove me wrong. Its one time I wouldn't mind it so much.

I've managed to install and run it under Wine (on Ubuntu Natty Narwhal). It randomly crashes out every ten turns or so. I'm going to try turning off sounds and see if that helps.
It will technically run on OSX using the latest version of Wineskin, but it runs ridiculously slow so as to be unplayable. Shame.
It works for me. I haven't played it much, just tested it. You need to change the Alpha Centari.Ini file and put this in it:

[Alpha Centauri]
DirectDraw=0
DisableOpeningMovie=1

(I'm running wine-1.2.2 on Xubuntu Natty)

I disabled the intro movie in the ini file and that got me a little farther. Worked very well until I start a game. Then If I click on anything the game crashes every time. For a second I thought I had it.

Did you also do:
DirectDraw=0

try also

ds3d=0
eax=0

Do you get some bad noises from the sound too. I mean like som Bzzz or Brrr from time to time? Very annoying.

Tried all that but not all together. With DirectDraw=0 it just crashed. I wasn't sure which section to put it under. I didn't have any sound issues.

edit***
tried DirectDraw=1
ds3d=0
and that got me a hair's width farther. Could move like once and then crash.

I have it running on WineSkins on mac os x: I had to configure like this:

ds3d=0
eax=0
DirectDraw=0
DisableOpeningMovie=1

otherwise I did not see the menu items (it all seemed to work but I couldn't see anything); I played about 30 turns and it never crashed

Great!

I recently rebuilt the wine install I was using to the new 1.4 and clicked the icon to see what would happen. I haven't played enough say for sure, but it seemed to be working better. I made it several turns in without issues, which I never accomplished before. I even got to quit the game by choice. Look ma! No crashes!

I won't say its working until I get a chance to put a couple of hours into it (which I don't see happening right away) but it looked quite positive and it would be interesting to hear if the new version does anyone else some good.
The newer versions of Wine seem to work fine (I have it in a v.2.5.4 wrapper and it seems to work)... BUT... I can only launch it from the GOG installer. I can't get it to run from any .exe file in the package. Anyone know what file is used by Windows to start it up? The Wine DB has the GOG version in particular with a platinum rating, but no notes on how to configure it.
