marko47: Hello,
you actaully don't need to disable anything to start the game on win 10, but you do need to enable direct play
Which can be done by pressing start> type in "features" click turn Windows features on or of, when shown.
find "Legacy Components" double click on it, you will see "direct play" check it. click OK, done!

One more thing if you didn't install AC in default "Program files folder... you will have to run it as admin or find axstart.exe in destination of the game to choose between the original game and expansion.

Neolytek: This got the game working for me. Thanks!
This worked for me thanks for the post.

Just got done doing a "reset w/data" on my Windows 10 computer (because it was freezing while loading the main desktop screen), reinstalled GOG Galaxy & downloaded my favorite games (including the SMAC Planetary Pack). Got the prompt about Direct Play when attempting to start both SMAC and Alien Crossfire, then saw the tip about checking Direct Play in the Legacy Components part of turning Windows features on/off. In all 3 cases, the search for Direct Play seems to be stuck on "searching for required files." Do I perhaps need to download Direct Play from the Microsoft website or something?

You might be one of the lucky ones were your antivirus is interfering. Try again with you antivirus turned off. Then it shall install as normal.

I also checked the Microsoft forums (lots of complaints about Direct Play issues, esp. since the Win 10 v1709 update this past fall), and tried temporarily disabling .NET Framework 4.7 per a suggestion there -- doesn't make any improvement for me. I will also make sure Skype is disabled (I never use it on this computer anyway), and if that doesn't help, I'll try temporarily disabling Bitdefender.

:D (sooooorry.....but)

So looks like you did read the same entry(s) that I read about it :D

And the best part of it in the forums was MS never replied too why those did interfere...... :D

Uninstalled Skype entirely -- doesn't seem to make any difference. Will try temporarily disabling .NET Framework 4.7 again, and if that doesn't enable enabling Direct Play, then it's on to disabling Bitdefender and attempting to enable Direct Play yet again . . .

Don't get me wrong, but that was why I suggested to disable your AV first......just saying ;)

OK, Skype is gone; Bitdefender is disabled; .NET Framework 4.7 is also disabled -- and enabling Direct Play is still stuck on "searching for required files"! :( If I could get the Direct Play issue fixed, I surely wouldn't mind setting up Compatibility Mode for SMAC and Alien Crossfire, but I think Direct Play probably should be addressed first.

Yep.....you need it.....

Just to be on the safe side ;)

You did install directx9.0c?

EDIT: reading through the same thread again....

One interesting suggestion:

The 1709 update has attempted to fix the Direct Play issue.
.....
[ EDIT: Dec '19 - Apparently the change made by MS describe above has caused problems with enabling Direct Play via Programs and Features. Curious that MS went the complicated route when they could have just switched Direct Play to enabled by default with the 1709 update. Those who are having this problem enabling Direct Play may find it will enable if they boot into Safe Mode ?

unfortunate didn't find a possibility for a direct link to his post to give proper credit.....

Haven't installed DirectX 9 yet. My husband has suggested setting SMAC and Alien Crossfire to run in Windows 7 (or earlier) compatibility mode first; if that doesn't work, then I'll look into installing DirectX9.

Nothing against your husband ;)

BUT this game (as well as a lot of others) it will need directx9.0c......and this is NOT included in directx10+

For those games, check the sales page:
Graphics: 3D graphics card compatible with >>> DirectX 9.0c <<<<

Don't use comp. mode, only use it if needed ;) Sometimes you might have to use it, but in general speaking, it is more advisable to not use it. (it does change savepath behaviour and and and ;) )

Got DirectX 9 installed just before bedtime last night. Now I'll need to try enabling DirectPlay while Bitdefender is temporarily disabled again. Hope it finally works!

Unfortunately, no. I installed "DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)", which the Microsoft website claimed included all of the DirectX 9.0 files, disabled Bitdefender's real-time protection, disabled .NET Framework 4.7, and then checked the box to enable Direct Play, and still am getting stuck on "searching for required files." I've been consoling myself with sessions of Sid Meier's Colonization (the original DOS version, not the Civ 4 spin-off). I know there's a "Planetfall" mod for Civ 4 which would give me at least some of the flavor of SMAC, but it wouldn't be quite the same as playing SMAC itself. (Back when I still had a Windows 7 computer, I played and enjoyed both SMAC and the Civ 4 "Planetfall" mod.) I suppose I should also do some more online research to see if there is anything else I should try to get SMAC/Alien Crossfire running on a Windows 10 computer, but I might take a break to do something else for a bit first, so I can troubleshoot some more when I'm refreshed.

sad to here :(

With this it shall normally work.......even on this funny Win10 version ;)

(good old colonization :D )

I am just wondering if MS did change something for the directplay behaviour.....which version of WIn10 are you running? (might be worthwhile) looking into this area....maybe.....
