I like the idea of redoing this game, however I think the asking price by the company (not by GOG, they only have so much flexibility) is too steep.

Even the 'special edition' shouldn't be more than $15, and the non-special, no more than 10.

Not many people who were born past the 80's will even know what this game was, so the old-school fan base should be your primary market, and it's a tough sell at the current price.

Any comments?

Well, from what I understand it's a remake, practically a whole different game. But even bearing that in mind the special edition does seem kind of pricy. Nothing the special edition offers makes me want to buy that version. Without the current 20% discounts the regular edition is a whole $10 less, that's quite a difference considering what they're offering. Personally I'd wait for the vanilla version to come up at a better discount before I decide to buy this. I've never heard of this game but it does interest me.
Used to play this on my Amiga years ago, never did finish it, now is my chance but I will also wait for a vanilla version, I have no need nor use for all that stuff that comes with it.

Digital special editions/bonus versions do not attract me to buy I am afraid.

This version is a mix of the 2005 Shadowgate Classic Mobile puzzles, with NES inspired music, and a bunch of new stuff as well.

You are looking for the Vanilla version (no DLC)?

I tend to agree on the price. Most of the special edition extras seemed like just some nice things to have, not something to add 50% to the price. Of course this is just my opinion; I'm sure others would/will appreciate them more than I do. At first I thought the extras were just gog.com bonuses like they have for older games!

Like Locke9, if I buy it I will probably wait for a larger sale on the vanilla game before picking it up. I did enjoy the NES game, and am interested in seeing the graphical updates to it, but I can wait for a price that better matches what I'd prefer spending on it.
To each their own, I guess. However I think the price is actually fair. This game isn't just something that was slapped together in 5 minutes and shipped with some form of emulator.
I have this game on steam (the special edition version), and I can tell you its quite excellent. The soundtrack is incredible.

One difference between GOG and Steam's release is that vanilla and special both get Shadowgate CLassic COmic with GOG. Steam didn't get that extra. Although that comic can be found on the web for free. Either through ZoJoi's website, or wayback machine on Infinite Ventures website.

Also keep in mind that there are three modes.... three difficulties, and each one changes puzzles, adds new ones, etc. So its almost like having three games in one.

Plus there are literally dozens of secret puzzles for unlocking extra items and achievements, extra plot, etc. SO there is quite a bit of replayability. Some of the deaths are well hidden, and require their own puzzle solving to even find them! Finding them leads to achievements.

If a company is going to make a remake, this is actually probably the model they should use! More features, not less!

Achievements are worthless. Steam achievements are just 'there' to make you think you're getting some value out of your game that you are not. It takes zero effort to do. Also it doesn't matter, you don't get achievements on a DRM free, launcher free version.

I have my own beef with the achievement system that has been the standard for over ten years. They add nothing to the game, but steam (Or whomever, even game devs themselves) want you to 'think' you're getting some incredible value because 'wow look, we've added 50+ achievements! ZOMGWTF'. Sorry that would never make me do anything other than the 'jerking off' motion with a stupid face and then ask 'okay so where's the real content?'

Have to agree with that, achievements count for absolutely nothing.

I'm a backer and got the GOG Special Edition, but due to issues with my system haven't played it yet; reading your post makes me look forward to the moment I'll be able to.

A pity the game has so few reviews. :(

The achievements are actually ingame, from a achievements menu. Even on the GOG version. Its basically another 'point system' for the game like how many old adventure games had point systems in the past (see Sierra games). Just things to do, a checklist of secrets and easter eggs, hidden deaths, secret puzzles.

In this case, its closer tied how some games have a 'percentage' system based on how many items, secrets one finds in a game. Assassin's Creed, Metroidvania style games, or Zelda for example.
