You can't break them. They refill your ammo/health/chi and when they are empty they don't have any other benefit.

Going near them when you're not at full capacity for whatever they restore will restore you.

Right, I had not noticed that right away. I must have had full chi etc. or already passed that shrine. The glass encasing suggests you're supposed to break it... One of the several ambiguous aspects of the interface / game design.

You're not alone, I know they don't break at all and I still try to do so from time to time.

I try to break everything in the game. Just as a matter of principle. I like smashing stuff! :-)
