Does anyone have any idea how to fix the low frames per second with this game? I'm trying to get it working on Windows 8. I've replaced the Quicktime.qts in the games folder with the current Quicktime.qts from the current Quicktime player's folder. Haven't installed the unofficial patch yet.

I tried using the unofficial patch as well and it didn't fix the stuttering. It makes things pretty unplayable because it also seems to completely screw up the timing in the game. I tried starting a new game and skipping the intro cutscene and the characters very slowly move towards each other (even though the animation plays at normal speed).
I found that, with Quicktime 4, I can get the videos to run on Windows 8 regardless of what compatibility settings I use with one exception and that is putting the game into 16bit colour mode, which, it turns out, seems to be the only thing I can do to get the frame rate running properly. With compatibility for XP SP3 and 640x480 resolution, plus the QT fix, I can get vids and a slightly jerky (but not as bad as it can be) frame rate, however as soon as I put it into 16bit colour mode, I lose the videos... (and get a beautiful frame rate). It's very frustrating.

EDIT: Scratch that. The frame rate is only 'slightly jerky' on the menu screen. In game it's still better than it can be, but it's also hard to live with.

EDIT2: Clean install, applied unofficial patch, XP SP3 compatibility, 640x480 resolution - still the same problem, either videos and awful frame rate, or 16bit colour, no videos and beautiful frame rate... grr!

EDIT 3: Tried using XP SP2: no difference. Tried using the edits to the .ini file which the unofficial patch allows, with CpuIdle = 1: no difference. I am completely running out of ideas now. I've been trying to get this game to run properly (on and off) for nearly a year now. I just don't know what to do.

Well, here are some more things dicussed to fix stuttering/lag: http://www.gog.com/forum/septerra_core_legacy_of_the_creator/unofficial_patch/post24

None of which seem to solve the problems above, or make any difference at all. Very frustrating.

Alt-Tabbing or cpuidle=5 was ineffective?
Have tried transcoded videos (get rid of QT codec)?

Alt-tabbing does not appear to produce the same 'black bars' that are mentioned in the posts about this, and has no other discernable effect. Altering the CpuIdle setting to anything at all makes no difference. The unofficial patch already transcoded the videos as far as I'm aware and, as pointed out above, they do actually work, just not when you set the compatibility settings to reduced colour 16bt, however it is only when that setting is in place (along with a few others) that the stuttering stops. I just can't work out why. :(
I am bumping this, I am also at the wits end with running Septerra Core on my Windows 8.1. It has like 5 FPS. and I tried everything.
I am having the same issue. I bought the game today, as it looked pretty cool and was at an excellent price. I installed and ran it. CGI videos run great, and then the menu is uber laggy. Then I go to play the game, and it runs with a little less lag, but isn't enjoyable at such speed. If I were to downgrade to Windows 7 (I'm on 8 because that is how my laptop was setup from retail), would the game run smoothly? Or is there a patch to fix the laggyness on Windows 8?
Guess I won't buy this one. Please post here if you manage to fix it.

This sounds familiar to the behaviour of DKII on Windows 8/8.1 where also a unofficial patch by Timeslip (http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net/) is available & had to be updated recently. (http://www.gog.com/forum/dungeon_keeper_series/dungeon_keeper_2_hardware_acceleration_fix_is_now_live/post74)

Maybe someone should contact Timeslip about this issue with also SC.
I've been playing this game for about 10 hours, and playing stock from the GOG Install. Its not so bad. Sure I'd love to have a better frame rate, but I checked a video on this game to see how it played, and it looked very similar to stock.

Its a good enough game, but it was never designed for 8. Someday I plan to make a Retro computer running 95 or something to play old as dirt games, and might get this running as it was meant to. I've played plenty on Windows 8 and have had little trouble. This game is worth playing stock, but welcome when someone researches more to get it to play better.
