-(forgive my so-so English)- I just upgraded to Windows 8 and believe it or not THIS is the only game that will not work for me.....starts up fine plays the intro FMV unlike 7, but once you get to the opening menu the graphics go crazy (liquid metal akin to Fallout 2 on Vista+7 but all purple with an odd double vision effect) rendering the game unplayable. I have tried all compatibility settings non worked...... I tested close to 60 titles from Steam, GOG, retail, and even Origin and got nearly(as in just this game) ALL of them to run most of which do so with less work getting running(ex Jade Empire is a PAIN to get running on W7 if you have the Steam version....loads up no problem on 8, Fallout 3 too) than Win7....so its sad that THIS is the one game I may have to give up if nobody can find a fix

Specs -Core i5 ivy,GTX 560ti SLI,and 8 gigs of DDR3 Ram

Does this help? Given the changes it makes to the graphics, it'll probably have some effect, although I'm not going to predict whether for better or for worse.
I have done some digging around and managed to get an Original copy of the game from Amazon, it runs well with Quicktime installed and compatibility settings applied.....so given this I suspect that whatever workaround the GOG team use to make it work on Vista/Xp is now what is keeping the game from running on Windows 8.....Perhaps GOG should consider making a Windows 8 specific patch or even a separate installer

As for the Unofficial patch timeslip pointed me to, it was a case of one step forward and two steps back, The patch failed to convert the FMV files and infact broke the movie playback in the game, but it DID stop the graphical crash allowing me to play the game, sadly the game lagged horribly.......I still hold out some hope that GOG can fix this game, but realistically its going to be up to the someone in the community.....sigh

For worse then, I guess. That's odd though, although it often fails to convert the movies, usually it only fails when septerra core itself is unable to play the movies. I guess windows 8 changed something.

...the fact that it stutters on win 8 worries me. People are reporting the same thing for DK2, and the similarity between the two is that they both convert the game to run in a window that takes up the whole screen rather than true fullscreen. (Which makes it behave far more nicely on win 7.) If windows 8 really can't cope properly with fullscreen windows, that's going to screw up a lot of the patches I've made. :(
Hmm..... yes I recall reading something about Windows 8 handling games running in windowed mode differently, but I have forgotten the details sadly....

In any case I fear that I'm right and GOG would have to make a custom solution for W8, be it a patch or a new installer of its own....neither of which are very likely

xuicsus: I'm also looking for a fix for this fatal error on win 8.
After installing Septerra Core, on the default installer settings, it was impossible to get the game running. Only thing running was the Windows cursor. Desktop mode in Windows 8, as well as the Metro UI crashed on a 640x480 window. Furthermore, it is impossible to kill Septerra Chore, from Task Manager. Logging off is required to get back to a properly functioning Windows 8 environment.

To fix this:

Step 1: Download Quicktime for Windows; the version that worked for me is Quicktime 7.7.3 for Windows 7 (from Apple's support site)
Step 2: Install Septerra Core with Administrator rights
Step3: Copy "" from your Quicktime Program folder, to the Septerra Core installation folder, overwriting the file in the folder.
Step 3: Set compatibility settings

- Windows 98/ME
- Set the bits to 16
- Run as Administrator

The game should run.

Note that on my Win7 64 install, the game only ran with Compatibility set to Windows XP SP 3. On Win8 this setting does not work for me.
Replaced quicktime.qts file from the current version of quicktime as suggested by previous poster in addition to the compatibility settings they listed and it solved this issue!!! Thanks!
Sigh.... didn't work for me all I did was break the FVM and now it just skips past it.....my English is limited so perhaps I misunderstood could you explain it more simply?
Hrmmm.. you know what, I was so focused on having the game actually work that I did not notice that it skipped the FMV as well. I wonder if that means that it will skip the in-game FMV? The game does work now though for me after replacing that file along with the compatibility settings. Does anyone know how critical the FMV's are to the story? Will it ruin the ending without them? I guess I could youtube it.. :-(

Update: In game FMV's do not play with this solution for me... It just skips them, but the game works just fine....

Yes this is as I thought....I wonder if it is possible to simply convert the FMV into something less bothersome than QT, if not we are ironically stuck waiting for Apple to give us a new version of QuickTime, that playes nicer with Windows 8......as for how "imprortant" the FMV is to the story....well imagine Final Fantasy 7-9 with no FMV and you get the idea, you would know what was going on most of the time but then suddenly (???) happens and you have no idea why your in a new location or why your missing one party member ect....

On another note, to this day this is STILL the only game I can't get to run on W8 (albeit Beyond Good and Evil and Sacred Gold took a fair bit of fiddling) so I,m not bashing the OS as far as compatibility goes

Oddly enough for me, I was trying to find a game to play on my Win8 laptop, so first I picked Haegemonia and that did not work, so now I tried Septerra Core... Bad luck for me... haha..
The OS is still fairly new, so were don't know every little trick to get every game to work on it ..... but over all I got more back (fallout 2+3, Morrowind, DIablo 2 and my old Kotor disc copy all work now) than I lost (septarracore) when I upgraded from 7

Any word yet on the fatal error panic problem of win 8?

I've been patient. I'll continue to be patient. Really, I understand the new OS and all. I just want to know if any headway has been made so I can play one of my favorite games again.
