Hey all, purchased Sanitarium since it was on sale and I remembered seeing it in PC gaming magazines way back when. Was looking forward to playing what looks like a gem of a game when I launched it. As soon as it launches, something is obviously wrong. Colors are...odd. Crazy rainbow show that makes it unplayable.

I've run through the solutions I've found in other threads (compatibility modes, opening the screen resolution window before launching, killing explorer.exe first, trying D3DWindower, palettestealersuspender). One solution suggested, alt-tabbing, doesn't work for me since when I alt-tab, it appears to hang my system until I kill Sanitarium's process using Task Manager.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have an ATI 5870 as my graphics card, can post other system specs as needed/desired to figure this out.

If you are using the latest drivers, try rolling back to either version 13.4 or 13.1 for AMD/ATI cards. Make sure to create a restore point that you can go back to in case something doesn't quite work out.
About killing the explorer, you can try with this batch code:

taskkill -f /im explorer.exe
start GOGLauncher.exe GOGSANITARIUM
pause
start explorer.exe
exit

And save it as bat

Edit: I have just tried and with the new installer it does not work for me. It's strange because with the old installer it worked like a charm.
If I workaround this, I'll edit the post to make it actually useful.

Edit 2: And for no reason it works again. This installer seems to behave according to quantum mechanics.

I can confirm that it worked just fine with previous drivers, but not with the current one. What I would like to know if this is just a temporary solution and there's going to be a fix to this issue or if it will be permanent and I will have to downgrade the drivers every time I want to play Sanitarium. Some of my other games require latest drivers to work without issues, so downgrade, upgrade, downgrade, upgrade... routine can grow old soon.

We are trying our best to work with the most current versions of drivers but sometimes they change drastically and break whatever workarounds we have in place so the fix is temporary but I can't tell you how long it will last as it depends on whether we can make the game more compatible with newer drivers.

Thanks for reply. I'm glad to hear that you're trying to figure out a solution. While most of the times latest drivers are a good thing, this isn't the first time when I encounter the situation where the new drivers don't work with the games.

Did as you suggested and downgraded the drivers to 13.4. Works like a charm now, so thanks a ton. Out of curiosity, will Sanitarium and a few other games that require downgrading the ATI drivers work just fine with an Nvidia card running the latest drivers? Been looking for an excuse to upgrade to a new graphics card in the near term, and that just might work for me. :D

I am not sure as far as Nvidia goes. My experiences on my personal computer with a 560 Ti as far as older games go has been relatively stable with the 314.22 drivers (yes, I know I need to upgrade them but they've been working well for most newer games so far *crosses fingers* ). Your mileage may vary and you may also need to roll back drivers on an Nvidia card but I can't state that with 100% certainty as there may be a million factors affecting performance other than the drivers and hardware you use.
Hey there,

Any possible updates for this issue? Im dying to play this game but as someone mentioned before i also play newer games and i cant afford to use some outdated drivers.

Hi Rieme,

Unfortunately, we still have not been able to find a stable workaround other than temporarily downgrading your drivers if you are using an AMD/ATI card. We will continue trying to resolve this but I can't guarantee when that will happen. Sorry about that :(
I loaded the most recent drivers today. With the new drivers the rainbow colors are gone, but I'm experiencing some weird flashing. Screen turns black for a millisecond and these flashes happen several times per minute. It doesn't prevent playing, but it's quite annoying.
I run Sanitarium on Win 7 64bit, with Radeon HD7950 and Catalysts 13.12 and I haven't noticed any rainbow colors or artefacts or anything :) I'm lucky I guess!
Today it works without issues for me too. Haven't updated the drivers since then, but last time I played without restarting the system after the driver update, which might have caused the issues.
Hi, Rieme again,

I purchased a new graphic card (R7850) and installed the newest driver and it worked! But don't ask me why. If you still encounter problems, maybe you should try out the newest driver instead of using the old ones listed in the workaround.

Cheers and Prost from Germany
