This is a guide I put together after installing and using WinRottGL for the first time last night. I wrote this because after a few Google searches I decided to install it a different way than the one listed on the WinRottGL website.

Files you will need

Rise of the Triad: Dark War - http://www.gog.com/game/rise_of_the_triad__dark_war

7-Zip an open source archive utility for extracting files - http://www.7-zip.org/

WinRottGL v1.70 - http://www.riseofthetriad.dk/WinRottGL_Full_v.1.70.zip

Graphics for WinRottGL - http://www.riseofthetriad.dk/GLgraphics.zip

DLL files for WinRottGL - http://www.riseofthetriad.dk/GLdllpack.zip

Where to extract the files and the order to extract them in

Once you have all three files (WinRottGL Full v1.70.zip, GLGraphics.zip, & GLdllpack.zip) you need to extract them to your Rise of the Triad folder. If you left the default install options for Rise of the Triad when you installed the game the location should be C:\GOG Games\Rise of the Triad. Extract them in this order and let them overwrite any files: extract GLgraphics.zip first, extract GLdllpack.zip second, & extract WinRottGL Full v.1.70.zip third.

Running WinRottGL for the first time

Once you have installed everything launch WinRottGL_Full_v.1.70.exe. The WinRottGL Menu will appear. Just under the text box displaying system version, programmer credits, and a list of the files that WinRottGL found you should see these options.

Resolution
You can select from a list of 4:3 aspect resolutions plus an option for 1920x1080 if you have a 1920x1080 display (not sure if other 16:9 resolutions are shown). Unfortunatley there does not appear to be a way to set custom resolutions and as a result I don’t think any 16:10 aspect ratio is supported. Maybe someone more familiar with WinRottGL can expand on this.

Alternate Battle Levels
This allows you to select map files in the RTC format which is for multiplayer maps

Alternate Game Levels
This is where you can select the Extreme RoTT levels and The Hunt Begins levels

Parameters
I have never used this. I assume this where you would put shortcut options for the WinRoTTGL exe file.

Multiplayer checkbox
Select this if you have selected a multiplayer map to run.

Run WinRottGL
Once you’ve set the above options you’re ready to play just click this button and Rise of the Triad launches.

WASD Controls

If you want to use the standard WASD control scheme you will need to change a few settings from within the game.

Invert Mouse
From the main menu go to options > ext user options > inverse mouse (select the check box beside it to activate)

Mouse Sensitivity
From the main menu go to options > controls > mouse sensitivity
You will probably want to increase this as the default setting is a little slow.

Keyboard Bindings
From the main menu go to options > controls > customize controls > customize keyboard
First I would right down all of the default key bindings as there doesn’t appear to be a reset option. Don’t worry it does not take long there are not that many key bindings.

The first key binding you want to change is the binding for Aim which is set to the letter A. Just select it and select a key not used by RoTT for example the letter L works fine.

For Forward select W, for Backward select S, for Strafe Left select A, and for Strafe Right select D.

That’s it you should now have a better looking and better controlling Rise of the Triad.
This tutorial is awesome!
However, there's lacking information about how to multiplayer WinROTTGL.
(and no, we don't want to use YANG/DOSBox).

Does anyone know how to multiplayer WinROTTGL?

How do I make it detect Extreme Rise of the Triad? I try to load the Extreme RTC but it doesn't detect the levels. Playing around to try and make it work triggered a bug that forced the camera to look downwards constantly and broke some of my game options.

Any help?

Put the EXTREME.RTL file into the same directory where you have the WinRottGL_Full_v.1.70.exe. Then Open WinRottGL and select it under "Alternate Game Levels". Start WinRottGL, start a new game and have ludicrous fun.
Thanks a lot. When I go to the WinRottGL download page, there is no v1.70 listed. All previous versions lacked many files, like Glut32 for example, and WinRott wouldn't start as a result. Your download link got me v1.70 which had all the necessary files I was lacking before. Greatly appreciated.
1.70 contains the missing files but it's not linked/listed in the official homepage.
1.74 is listed but links to a not-working version called 1.74_ (underscore).
However, if you tweak the download URL, you can get a working 1.74 working exe.

Might be worth emailing the author/maintainer of the website regarding these discrepancies...
Thank you for this guide.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Now, I know this is a thread about v1.70, but I've decided to use v.2.24, the installation as shown in the tutorial here worked anyway. I've only encountered one problem - I can't get it to run in fullscreen because the option in the launcher is grayed out. It wouldn't be a problem, but the in-game status-messages are displayed under the window options, making it impossible to read them. Is there any fix to this?
Thanks!

I would also recommend looking at these two threads as well for other ROTT sourceports:

As of today, riseofthetriad.dk no longer exists and won't be coming back, so the OP's links won't work: https://forums.duke4.net/topic/2560-rise-of-the-triad/page__view__findpost__p__379215
