meonfire: thanks for the patch :)

does anyone know why gog doesnt update game so that this patch is allready included ?
this kinda upsets me
The same reason they use the 1.0 release not the 1.2 gold version (everything in the US patch plus a couple of small bug fixes). The new owner probably only has the rights to the original game not the patchs.

Hmm how strange they don't even have the making of etc that's included on the gold edition...

xMrAx: Tried this patch, but with it I get horrible screen tearing.
I just installed the patch (after briefly playing without the patch) and the screen tearing jumped out at me as well. Did you find a solution to it?

Aaronjw13: I successfully installed the patch, and the difficulty settings and key rebinding options have been added. Unfortunately, the patch has had the side effect of screwing with the colors/lighting. In dark rooms with candlelight, it seems like the colors are separating, so that you see bands of blue, red and green, rather than anything remotely looking like candlelight. Anyone else with this issue?

EDIT-- or am I just going crazy? Was it always like that? Can't actually remember now.
I was wondering about that. I didn't run the unpatched version for that long but I don't remember the torch light be so banded. (I don't see blue/red/green more blue/brown) I really should have kept the original files before patching. Particularly as the Verify function in Galaxy reports "Server Problem"

Did some digging on this patch today and the terrible colors/lighting that came with it. No you are not crazy, it absolutely ruins the colors. Unfortunately whatever changed is buried in \Realms of the Haunting\Roth\Roth.exe -- I already checked all the other files in this patch and its definitely Roth.exe that screwed up the video. I'm not well versed enough in x86 and hex editing/decompiling to locate the problem and fix it. Hoping somebody more knowledgeable than I am sees this post.

update: Do not waste your time with this; just start dosbox without the autoexec and use CTRL + F1 to rebind keys (reference the manual) - The difficulties don't really change much either.

The added difficulty options are nice, but damn, after patching to the US version I get really bad screen tearing. Also like the person above me said, the colors and lighting are screwed up. It's pretty much not worth playing to me because of this. I already noticed one bug fixed, but it doesn't even bother me compared to this tearing.

Have you tried to push letter 'v' to lower the gamma correction? EU version has the gamma at the lowest by default while USA one has it two levels up, and, imo it look worst that way.

Can someone please reupload the patch? Link seems to be broken.
yes please, seems broken.

Please, note, that it's always best to decide, whether you want to install US patch or not, before starting your walkthrough. I was in a middle of the game when decided to change UK to US, and it seems save games from UK are incompatible with US.

Thank you for the new link!
Yeah once I installed this, now the voices are totally messed up. I DID get the other updates like control bindings, but the audio is screwed up, when it was totally fine before. If there's a few files I could leave out when installing this controls fix that would restore the audio I'd appreciate it.

It's been awhile since I've played this, but you should probably run "Launch Settings" in the GOG Realms of The Haunting folder after using the patch.

Auto settings should set up Sound blaster 16 properly for both sound effects and music.
If you know how to use a soundfont, MT32 or have a MIDI device you can also use that for the game music instead.

So I messed with the patch a bit and if I copy everything in the patch zip to the game folder except for the 4 dbase files, it seems like the game allows for the new style of controls, but it doesn't mess up the audio. HOWEVER, there is one issue, and I don't know if this becomes an issue later, or not. When you start the game, it pulls up a menu asking for what difficulty you want to play on, and what adventure difficulty you want. The problem is that instead of showing difficulty levels, it says "Missing text" for all the difficulties.

I then checked around in the first few rooms, and they all have correct voice audio as you click around. No audio issues from what I've seen at the first few rooms. It also still shows the correct text as you're messing with doors and items. Even your inventory menu shows up correctly.

Like I said though, I have no idea if leaving out those dbase files (from the patch) will cause issues later in the game or not. Since I just installed this game for the first time yesterday, I really don't know anything about this game anyway, so I don't even know what all files those dbase files have in them in the first place.

So far though the only issue I've seen is the lack of difficulty selection text.

OH! I also tried many times to mess with the launch settings (before and after messing with the patch, by the way). For some reason, when I start that, it pulls up a DOSbox window, then it quickly expands to fullscreen and crashes out. Launch Settings won't really work for me at all unfortunately. If there was another way to start that that might actually work, I'd like to try it.

I decided to do a full install from scratch, and found out that for the install program to run you need a readme.txt file found in \Realms of the Haunting\DATA to be put in Realms of the Haunting\ROTH.

If you want to follow along with the install process, here's what I did:
Downloaded the current setup_realms_of_the_haunting_2.0.0.12.exe from my GOG library
Downloaded the patch from: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/746-realms-of-the-haunting-uk-to-us-patch

Installed ROTH to my games\gog folder *Don't use program files as an install area
Installed the patch as so: https://www.gog.com/forum/realms_of_the_haunting/resolution_and_sound_after_us_patch/post1

*A simple extract to path doesn't do the trick, you need to extract multiple times the same file to different directories.

From the data in the zip to
\Realms of the Haunting\DATA\DATA
\Realms of the Haunting\ROTH\DATA

From the gdv in the zip to
\Realms of the Haunting\DATA\GDV

From the m in the zip to
\Realms of the Haunting\DATA\M
\Realms of the Haunting\ROTH\M

The rest of the files not in folders (.exe , .ini, .dat) to
\Realms of the Haunting\DATA
\Realms of the Haunting\ROTH
"Launch settings" seems to be missing, so we'll just temporarily edit the dosboxROTH_single.conf and add "install" to it:

install
#roth @roth.res
exit
It also needs the readme.txt to function, so copy \Realms of the Haunting\DATA\readme.txt to Realms of the Haunting\ROTH
Run "Launch Realms of the Haunting" and choose the correct audio settings. Return dosboxROTH_single.conf back to normal.

I also like to edit dosboxROTH.conf to make the following audio changes:

[mixer]
rate=44100

[sblaster]
oplrate=44100
Run the game! The opening interplay video will likely be a bit messed up, but that shouldn't happen with any of the other videos. "c" and "v" will play with the gamma settings.
's' picks up items in your inventory. This is useful to change the order of what weapons are available in your # hotkeys, as well as to use potions (place potion on hand icon beside portrait).

Once you have it running properly you may want to consider changing output=opengl in dosboxROTH.conf, as that should give you smoother gameplay.
Or even updating DosBox to a more modern build like staging or ECE. (Being able to use opengl with glshader=sharp is a very nice visual combo!)

That seems weird -- that sounds like what happens when you don't have all of the files.

Refer to http://web.archive.org/web/20160412103424/http://shadowcat.freehosting.net/roth_patch.html and https://www.gog.com/forum/realms_of_the_haunting/patch_to_allow_changing_keybindings which were about a much less-complete (albeit much smaller) patch, and which exhibited bad audio issues if you didn't follow instructions carefully.

I don't think you should have run into this if you extracted all of the files, so it might be worth double-checking things.
