3. I am using Windows Vista/7 with UAC turned on, and my exports aren't found in the game's
directory

shweppy: I tried everything listed on this board and others, and still could not fix the problem, so I came up with my own solution that actually saves you from having to copy/paste your saves across games as well. Here's what I did:

1. Create a directory that sits outside of the "Program Files (x86)" directory tree. I put mine at "C:\QfgSaves"

2. We need to modify the dosbox configuration files to mount the a: drive to this folder. Each game has its own dosbox configuration file (QFG1 has two). Go to "Program Files (x86)\\Quest for Glory Pack", and go into each directory and do the following:
a. Grant yourself write permissions to the dosboxQG#.conf file (through the security tab in the properties menu)
b. Edit the file in notepad. In the [autoexec] section of the file, add the following line after @echo off:
mount A c:\QfgSaves

Once this is done for all games, you can simply export your saves to a: (ie a:\). When importing a character, just change directory to a: and you will see all the exports you have made for all games. No more copy/paste. It just all works.
i tried as you suggested and it work to export but when i try to import to QFG3 it says invalid directory. ay suggestions??
I've been able to play through QFG1-4 without a problem, dragging my imports into the correct game each time and it recognizes it fine.

I hit a snag with QFG5; no matter what I do, it doesn't recognize I have an import. I've put the import file, SHADOWS.SAV, info the main folder, the imports folder, and the save games folder, each with zero success,

I am running Win7 64bit.

Any suggestions or advice on this? I haven't really seen much about people having issues importing into 5.

Thanks!

No idea at all. I had copied my shadows.sav file to the imports folder, and it was recognized just fine. Only thing I can think of is if there's an error in the exported file. Grab characters.rar and see if those files are imported for you. The shadows.sav is the one I used, and it was recognized just fine, so if you can import it, then there's something wrong with your character :(

I feel kind of lame, lol. I finally figured it out. I was looking for the import option on the main selection page, like the previous 4 games were. When I gave up and went to just "Play", there it was at the bottom. It's been so long since I've played these, I had forgotten.

Thanks!

I'm glad you posted that. I didn't remember that either and I'm playing through the series again. You saved me from a future of tearing my hair out trying to figure out why I can't import.
NM, ignore me, figured out the issue. I saved, not exported. Doh! :/

jimmi.s.hansen: I, and countless others, have had a problem when exporting the .sav file from QFG1, but after searching forums for 2½ hours I found a solution.

The problem was QFG2 not accepting the 1 kb .sav file as a "proper QFG1 save".

Solution: open the .sav file in WinRAR or similar program, the file contains another file, with no file extension. Extract the file to the QFG2 game directory, add the .sav file extension and - hey presto! Problem solved.

I played QFG1 VGA in ScummVM and tried exporting to AGD interactive's QFG2 remake. I don't know if the problem or solution is applicable to other combinations.

Took me forever to find out, so had to pay it forward!
Hi Jimmi,

I read this and tried it, but WinRAR wasn't able to open my .sav file. Any suggestions? I'm playing the VGA version on a Win 7 64-bit machine. Played it on DOSBox.

Thanks!
Having the same problem as Silvercloak. It is not a proper quest for glory 1 save file. Nothing in this FAQ so far has fixed that problem.

JMich: At the very end of the game, after the ending sequence, you will get a prompt allowing you to export your character. This is not done through the "Save Game" dialog, but a different one. (images requested)
VGA version image. JMich, perhaps you can edit the first post and add the EGA & VGA images?

Thank you, added the export screens.
To import, I just copied the file that I saved from QFG1 and pasted it into the QFG2 folder.

For example, if you just finished QFG1 and want to import your character to QFG2:

Look in the program folder where all your games are held (mine is C:\GOG Games\Quest for Glory Pack), you'll see a list of QFG games 1-5.

Go into the QFG 1 folder, look for the export file that you saved from the previous game.

Copy and paste that export file into the QFG2 folder.

Open QFG2, and when you click on "import character", look through the list. The file you just pasted into that folder should be there.

Hope this helps!
If this helps anyone: I just tried to import into QFG2 with some old exports. My export was named THIEF.SAV, had to rename to theif.sav (no capital letters) before it would let me import.
I played QFG 1 - 3 with dosbox without any import issues, but after I finished QFG3 and tried to import my character into QFG4 same as I did before with the other games, it tells me my QFG3 character is not a proper save file. HOWEVER QFG4 does seem to recognize my QFG2 character when I tried importing that character as a test. Does anyone know WTF is going on?

Many thanks to Schweppy!
]For anyone else having trouble, this might clarify things a little bit, I hope.

So, this was kind of confusing because of a few things: My saves and files are all in c:\GOGGames\Quest for Glory Pack. And the instructions weren't making sense at first. (I'm using Windows 8 but it looks like the directions are for the same software, not sure why mine is different.)

I figured out that to change the permissions for the entire thing I just left clicked on the Quest for Glory Pack folder, clicked the Properties option, went to Security and clicked the check box under Permissions for Authenticated Users that said, "Full," and that was that. Hit OK, done. Now all the QfG files have full permission.

I couldn't find where it said [autoexec] at first: It's in the second DosBox file called "dosboxQG1VGA_single," and there I was able to input the "mount A c:\QfgSaves" line right below "@echo off" and save it. (No other changes, don't delete anything. Make sure to save if or it won't stay!) Then I went ack into my QfG1vga remake game (saved in the Baron's Castle at the very end just before recieving the title of Hero) and made the final save game file with prompts from the game. (Have to watch the ending all the way through, a regular saved game doesn't work.)

Another place that lost me: I didn't realize that I had to do the same "mount A" line in the QfG2 dosbox config file at first. (Similar file in QfG2 with the "_single" at the end as well.) Took a minute but I got it. When you run QfG2, hit Import and then change directory, type in a: and click ok. Your save game files from QfG1 VGA remake called "glory1.sav" should show up. (If not, do the thing other people suggested about opening the file with winzip or something and extract the correct file. Mine wasn't zipped so I didn't have that problem.)

The problem I was having was that no matter where I moved the save game file from 1, it wasn't showing up in any directory when I tried to import. Thanks to this trick, it shows up and is usable.

Thanks for the SUPER helpful post! Took me hours and a phone call to my QfG savvy sister to finally find this!

The OP was written back when GOG was using v1.x installers, which by default installed the games in Program Files. Will have to update it for the v2.x installers, which shouldn't have the VirtualStore issue anymore.
Quick notice: If instead of saving to a: you save to c: the exported character should appear in the game's directory (Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 1 VGA) which you should be able to then move to the next game's directory. Or mount another directory as a: which does take care of most of the troubles :)
Enjoy your stay in Shapeir, and beware of the Terrorsaurus.
