Quakespasm is great, is more oriented to people that want to play the game the way it is, Tenebrae or DarkPlaces looks much better if you want to play the game more close to a nowadays graphic experience.
Thank you, great post.
If i just mount the cd from gog release, do i need to de-emphasise music? I won't be converting it, just mount and play with quakespasm-0.92.0_win64

Small question. Is there a way to play the expansions with Quakespasm? It seems to work only with the vanilla game (or at least, I couldn't find a function to play the expansions with it).

Yes, there is :) The easiest way is to create a shortcut to the Quakespasm.exe, right click on it, click on "Properties", and in the "Target" field add "-game rogue" for Dissolution of Eternity or "-game hipnotic" for Scourge of Armagon. It could look for example like this:
"C:\GOG Games\Quake\quakespasm.exe" -game rogue
It also works the same for pretty much every other source port.
Excellent guide!

For clarification, in case anyone else can't seem to get the music working properly, even after converting them to the proper file format, make sure that the tracks are named like this...

'track02'
'track03'
'track04'
...etc, always skipping 'track01', since that is a data file only.

When I ripped the CD images Windows Media Player automatically renamed the tracks to their official titles; for example the first track was renamed 'Quake Theme' (track02), and Quakespasm wouldn't detect the files in the music folders. Once I renamed them as shown above they worked perfectly!
How do you extract the audio files in MINT?

Thanks, this helped me.
A few observations:

UltraISO gives me the option to just copy the tracks from the CD images directly as wav files, so there's that, no need for conversions or mounting. I don't know if the other programs do the same, but I get the impression people go to extra lengths to extract that soundtrack. If anyone needs details on how this is done with UltraISO let me know.

Quakespasm spike will not pass the loading/console screen when starting a new game. To bypass this you can start the game in the normal/classic quakespasm, save just after the game starts, then run the game again with spike and load the save. If anyone knows a fix for this, let me know.

The episodes (Hipnotic and Rogue) are listed in the MODS submenu, so there is no need for command lines and such. They can also be launched, along with Quakeworld, from the game's Menu>Other inside the GOG client.

I highly recommend Quake Injector, a nifty tool that brings all mods in one place and installs them with just a few clicks on it's interface.
https://www.quaddicted.com/tools/quake_injector

And yes, that pesky dll ruined my entyre evening, since I had no idea why the moded game would run on Steam, but not on GOG.

Anyway, happy fragging :)

I just want to warn anyone coming here looking for help with the music, that the tool recommended (DAEMON Tools) is malware.

DAEMON Tools took control of my internet browser and made several alterations to it, including changing my default search engine. It also bombarded me with advertisements in the time I had it installed.

I have no idea what else it might have done, and it did all this without my permission.

Find another way to get the music working properly, or just play without.

This application is malware. Pure and simple malware. AVOID.

edit: I think I have gotten rid of the malware now, but only after resetting my browser and losing all my security addons. for anyone coming across this thread, the malware installed will be called either Isurfstart, or web companion. both are installed without permission, and web companion in particular will make a strong effort to appear legit. delete both if you find them and run your antivirus and anti-malware software.

philscomputerlab: Quake: The Offering Tweak Guide

In this video I am showing you how to get the most out of Quake: The Offering, a recent release from GOG.com.

I will be using a modern Quake engine, Quakspasm, show you how extract the audio files from the CD images, how to de-emphasise the Quake audio files (this is not needed for the mission packs) and where to place the audio files so that the game has working music.

♦Downloads and links♦

Quakespasm: http://quakespasm.sourceforge.net/

SoX - Sound eXchange: http://sox.sourceforge.net/

DAEMON Tools Lite 10: https://www.daemon-tools.cc/products/dtLite

♦deemph.bat batch file for de-emphasising♦

sox "01 Track 1.wav" "track02.wav" deemph
sox "02 Track 2.wav" "track03.wav" deemph
sox "03 Track 3.wav" "track04.wav" deemph
sox "04 Track 4.wav" "track05.wav" deemph
sox "05 Track 5.wav" "track06.wav" deemph
sox "06 Track 6.wav" "track07.wav" deemph
sox "07 Track 7.wav" "track08.wav" deemph
sox "08 Track 8.wav" "track09.wav" deemph
sox "09 Track 9.wav" "track10.wav" deemph
sox "10 Track 10.wav" "track11.wav" deemph

Updates / Notes / Additions

1. Please delete opengl32.dll from C:\GOG Games\Quake

In my case I didn't have to, because I was using the 645 bit version of Quakespasm, but delete it regardless, it's a wrapper and can interfere when trying to play with a Quake engine

2. The game will play music from the first drive letter. So if you have a real drive as D: and a virtual as E:, it won't play the Quake music from E:. Solution: Swap the drive letters

3. There is controversy surround the de-emphasising of the Quake sound tracks. I've found all sorts of information online, but it's possible that de-emphasising is not necessary. Best to listen to the two versions in my video and make a call yourself :)
So to update this.

You will need Quakespam as linked in the original guide.

SOX is not needed neither is DAMEMON Tools lite, you will need to download a patch for Quake to add music to it since GOG removed it

The patch is here: https://www.moddb.com/games/quake/downloads/ultimate-quake-patch-v1-11

The Patch when you run it will want to install to Steam just install it to that and thats fine.

(If your using 7-zip or something you can just right click and extract it to a folder of your choice, as we just need the music folder.)

Once thats done navigate to where that is and enter the id1 folder, and the sound folder copy the cdtracks folder to your GOG Quake\id1 directory. Rename this folder to music. You can then delete the patch folder where you put it.

Quake should then run with the music.

Under Quakespam if you want the original demos playing create shortcut for quakesspam.exe and edit the properties for it so the target says quakespasm.exe -fitz

-fitz makes quakespasm play the original Quake demo files. (Demos being when you launched the game the AI would play a set amout of levels.)

(If people want a more depth guide for Quake (and its addons let me know, as the addon music just needs music files moved and renamed, I also have the Q Zone and Anni addons installed so I can show you how to add them.))

I downloaded the 64 bit quakespasm. Copied my Id 1 folder to the quakespasm folder all good. Now how do I get the expansions? My regular quake offering wont work right either. But quakespasm works great. I never played these games back in the day but I love them now. They knew how to make games then!

Thanks

smuggly: Now how do I get the expansions?
Copy the hipnotic and rogue folders into your Quakespasm directory. Then you can launch them via shortcut of the quakespasm.exe with either -hipnotic or -rogue in the command line.

This was already covered by Syrion a few years ago in this very thread but since that time I think the Quakespasm developers have removed the need to have game in the command parameter (if it doesn't work without it then you can always add it in after) but I'm not a Quakespasm user personally so I can't say that with 100% certainty.

Also, VirtualDVD (version 8.8.0.0) installs BRTSvc (the sponsor, a cripto miner) by default and doesn't allow access to audio tracks anyway. It's not an option anymore. Avoid.

Is there any other option for mounting the CD with audio tracks?
