Hi guys,

Unfortunately due to complicated legal issues we needed to remove the ogg music from the game. Instead we've added disk images into the build so that the DosBox version stays intact (as DosBox can mount CD images by itself). As for the Windows version, if you happen to have the game's CD you can just insert it and play the game with music.

I'm terribly sorry for the inconvenience, but the world of legal agreements written 20 years ago can be ... a complicated one.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the game!

But the CD Image with the music stays? Is it compressed losslessly?

Yes, this is a lossless format. The .cue files are also present.
Is there also CD music for the mission packs? If so I guess these could just be mounted using DaemonTools and then ripped to mp3 with Windows Media Player?

Small clarification, so I can answer questions (or accusations) when I stumble onto them.
The music is still there, just as CD Audio, not ogg files, right? Or is the CD Audio music different from the ogg one?

Is it just the format of the music that's the problem? As in you're allowed to distribute a copy of the old CD image complete with audio tracks, but not oggs or MP3s of the music.

If that's the case, is there any particular reason you (or we) can't just patch together a version of the engine that runs natively under windows to mount that disc image and play music from there?

I'm just wondering because Quake is the big 20 next year and it'd be nice to see a slightly more up to date in general engine being used than the rather neglected retail releases. Something like Fitzquake for example.

I know it's not something that'd happen quickly (likely having to be rebuilt from the original source release because of incompatible licenses), but I reckon if you let the Quake community know that you'd distribute such a engine as the default for Quake (Lets face it the retail releases are old and busted and the available alternate engines are incredibly fragmented) you'd find a lot of Quake fans willing to donate time and code to the project.

The music is still there in the DosBox version because it "mounts" the disk images present in the build. Unfortunately we couldn't do the same for the Windows version ourselves.

CD Audio is lossless - that is the only difference.

Fitzquake is dead. Quakespasm is it's successor and imho the best choice. (There is also Baker's Fitzquake Mark V, of course, but it's really more of a tech demo.) The only other big netquake source port is Dark Places. But that's too different from the original.

Fairfox: Yes, more clarification is needed; if we took the original music and ripped it into ogg format ourselves (like, apparently, the original installer had), would the modified game work with that, or have you now stripped the whole thing out, and the Windows game won't play the music in ogg format even if it's created?

I guess I'm asking if you're doing a 'wink wink, do it yourself' thing (which is okay, if a hassle), or if you're basically stiffed us even fixing the Windows version outside of the horrible drive mounting (which is just fugly as far as I'm concerned).
It looks like a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean" kind of thing.

I fired up PowerISO, mounted the CUE and the music is all there. Basically, all that's really been done is an extra click or two added instead of everything being all-in-one.

So there are three CD Images, right?

Can we have the "for morons" version of how to do this?

Yes, there are.

gamed.cue
gamea.cue
game.cue

Game.cue is the original game and the others are the mission packs.
