Quake 4 has issues on modern graphics cards with more than 1 Gb VRAM, it looks terrible even with Ultra Textures and 1080p resolution.

First off don't use (force) Ambient Lighting in the settings as it bleaches everything out and messes up the textures even more.

Now digging about past hour I found some cfg file fixes (Quake4Config.cfg located in q4base folder within install folder) that are working for me, these are copied from another source and not my work :

seta image_ignoreHighQuality "1"

According to this post on the steam forums You can also try setting sys_videoRAM from 0 to 512 in your Quake4Config.cfg file as it's an issue with the game not recognising VRAM properly on modern video cards.

I don't know if the settings you posted put the visuals above the in game ultra quality settings though.

The setting I put up forces the game to run in Ultra as the VRam thing regardless of what preset you use causes the renderer to run in llow making it look a bit crap.

That there worked just fine and only took a few mins to do as most of the stuff was already right

This needs to be a sticky, at least until Gog can patch it into the game.

Yes you can from what I have read it works on Doom 3 also, not 100% sure on BFG Edition but don't see wht not as it is running on iD Tech 4 the same as this.
Is not working...
Just wondering if these work with the GOG version to add some extra graphical effects and improve the textures.

I've only ever used GTX Q4 previously, with a non-GOG version of Q4.

EDIT: Oh, the PCGamingWiki page lists the below as a fix:

Create an autoexec.cfg containing the below and save it in the q4base folder:

seta image_downSize "0"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_roundDown "0"
seta image_useCompression "0"
seta image_useNormalCompression "0"
seta image_anisotropy "16"
seta image_lodbias "0"
seta r_renderer "best"

There is a pretty good thread regarding this on the Steam forums.

Honestly, it feels a bit shitty that nodboy bothered with fixing the game until now, especially since they still have the guts to charge 20 bucks for it (price without discount)
Many thanks for this. When i first loaded up selected ultra though wow never though graphics where that bad. This fix though should been incorporated in game from start.
Are you sure that is really working?...

try to post a screen here...

Iain: Snip
I found another fix on another forum but it defaulted to low settings, which was a step up but still not doable. Thanks for sharing this, it helps!

@Mods: Could we get a sticky for this please?

The game defaults to lower than "low" settings - the textures look like a 3d game from '97 or '98 without this fix, not something from 2005. I didn't take screenshots before I fixed it, but it definitely looked worse than I rememered, and that was playing on a single core Celeron with an ATI 9250 gpu.

The fix isn't that hard to do, and it's well worth it :D

Got ultra working better then the best... looks like CD version now here is what i did... FULL and total install, set resolution and aspect ratio, enabled multicore, clicked ULTRA maxed out my AA and then changed values below:
seta bse_rateLimit "1.0"
seta s_useDeferredSettings "1"
seta s_minStereo "8"
seta s_volume "1.1"
seta r_useSMP "0"
seta r_swapInterval "0"
seta r_multiSamples "2"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_downSize "0"
seta demo_enforceFS "0"
seta com_videoRam "768"
Images linked above but if you missed them HERE they are with these settings on an 8core 970 ^_^

at minimum seta image_ are required and so is seta com_videoRam (for me atleast) but i included all my changes that i had to make to fix audio and graphical quirks.

Thanks, fiddling with these values seems to have (mostly?) fixed it for me.
Nothing seems to help here, textures look like total embarassment... no matter what values I put into autoexec.cfg

I don't like to complain at GOG but I think they should at least run the game on modern PC to proof-check for such situations. Bah.
