Thought id post here and mention I recently installed and tried the vkQuake API and well have included a screenshot of me running it with improved textures perfectly fine.

I have come to realise it actually feels more stable than say quakespasm.

the url to get it is here

I also highly recommend the same API for Quake 2 as well which you may get here

I still have a problem: quakespasm doesn't play the music.

Are you sure? The music for base Q1 is mostly ambient. Try to lower music volume during play in the menu and listen if something changes. It should work without problems with QuakeSpasm if you installed everything correctly. There's no music in the main menu of QuakeSpasm, so maybe this is what made you think that the music doesn't work at all.

Thank you so much for writing and maintaining this guide. I recently had the itch to revisit Quake and Quake 2 and was ecstatic to see there was a relatively simple solution for setting up the GOG versions with sourceports, and also for inserting the original music back in Quake 1.
This guide was very helpful in getting Quake 2 to run, thanks!

I do believe you made a tiny mistake though. Xatrix is the first expansion, Rogue the second. You may want to correct that in your first post so people use the correct music files.
I think GOG should pay me extra for this)
You're a lifesaver! Thanks a lot!!!
Also, Quake II music rocks!

Hi, thanks for pointing this out! You're right, the Exp numbering is flipped, but from what I can tell the files are congruent with their incorrect labelling, so that my "Exp2" files are the Xatrix ones. Let me know if I'm mistaken about that.

Xatrix / "Exp 2"

I might re-upload the files to avoid any confusion.
The music works after following this guide (1st post) but Quake 2 runs in Windowed mode, not full screen? ALT+ENTER doesn't work either.

Well done sir.

Thank you for all this effort.
What the problem with GOG music? It work. Wrong shaffle for addons?

Best source-ports are
Quake 2 RTX in OpenGL (better) and in RTX mode - not so good, but official. And based on not so good Q2Pro in openGL mode (RTX mode patched since release and now way differ).
Yamagi - best cross-platform OpenGL source-port. Support widescreen (maybe video seq are wong porportions stretched)
DirectQII (two versions) - DirectD3D source-port. Looks great. Widescreen supported (again, maybe video poor stretched)
Facelift mod - actually source-port too (require patching exe file) - best of the best for Windows. Widescreen not suported.

Any others source-ports are afwul from release. Q2XP get bad updates and now way differ than original Quake2. Still Q2XP are much-much better than "pathces"(fake cause mod)\ports\ets from KMQ, and Berzerker.

IIRC correctly it wasn't available at launch (and probably for a long while after)

GOG version never receive any updates. Here in GOG there is a lot of DOS or WIN games with image mounting or already ripped to ogg musics. No any problems. Probably there is some troubles in Galaxy client?

Always do check files in Steam\Galaxy\etc same as in BitTorrent client (or DC\same). At least twice. Unfortunatly Galaxy 2.0 never say result and later start redownloading DirecX\redists each time. Steam recheck them too, but without redownloading. Galaxy exactly download it again.
Galaxy must started as admin permanently, and before downloading\checking files.

(some games in Steam never pass verifying files)
---------------------
GOG version really broken. But it must be fixed by installing 3.20 again (some files are corrupted in GOG, not sure which ones, main dll files are same). Music work as it must do for Quake 2. Im not sure how it work for addons. Originally it must shuffle 5 tracks from original and 5 new tracks (for 2nd addon 5 from first and 5 new). 20 audio tracks in total.
