So figured out what is really going on. For whatever reason Yamagi is only playing the music from the BaseQ folder even though I have the separate music folders in Rogue and Xatrix where those mission packs are. No idea how to fix that.

Weird.

Which version do you use? Version 7.02 (released this week) had some changes to the search path code.

Recently formatted my drive so I did a clean setup of 7.02

Then you should try 7.01.

Figured it out. Tracks have to be listed as 02.ogg not track02.ogg

Right. That's good. We do not need to bother Yamagi or Daniel about some new bugs.
You should add this patch for Quake 1. As the Quake 1 and it's mission pack 2 has some timing issue and this fixes it.

Those files aren't used with this guide, with the accurately ripped flac files I provided those audio images can actually be deleted to save HD space.

Updated guide and files September 6, 2018
Oi mate, thanks for the guide and music instructions. I'm not sure but is it legal to just download the files? I mean they are part of the game but if so why wouldn't they be in the game to begin with.

Have a good'n

Hi,

for Quake 1, they are included in the original image files, there must have been some kind of stipulation in regard to selling it with the playable wav files. These files aren't being sold, and are intended for those who purchased the game, so there shouldn't be any legal problems with downloading them.

for Quake 2, they are included, but mine are just higher bitrate.

These are lossless "accurate rip" flac files. Note: I am not convinced that Quake 1 has "pre-emphasis", so I have left the files exactly as they are on my retail disc. But for the sake of completion, I have included both SoX and iTunes de-emphasized copies of my original rip, those files can be found
Quake 1 original CD release does indeed have pre-emphasis for its soundtrack. I own Quake 1's original CD release and can attest to it. Exact Audio Copy, the program I used in order to rip the audio tracks from my own CD, states that the CD is pre-emphasized.

I'm not suggesting that the CD doesn't have Pre-Emphasis flags in the subcode, I'm saying that I don't think the audio actually has Pre-Emphasis in the mastering. I have Quake version 1.06 and it has Pre-Emphasis flags in the index/cue as well, however later releases of the game have identical audio tracks, while missing the Pre-Emphasis flags, so one of them has to be incorrect. I personally think the audio sounds better without de-emphasis so, I put my own opinion up there.

I included both the original and both SOX and iTunes de-emphasized versions just for completion, so people can pick whichever they like.

djdarko: Make a backup of your files beforehand, I suggest starting with a clean installation - you can also use Galaxy to "Manage Installation" and "Verify / Repair", otherwise read on!

Quake 1

Download QuakeSpasm (quakespasm-0.93.1_win64.zip)
webpage
file download

Open the "quakespasm-0.93.1_win64.zip" file and extract the contents of the inside folder to your Quake installation folder. (Overwrite any files if prompted.)

Download Quake 1 Music *
music download

Create "music" subfolders as follows, and unpack the .flac files to their appropriate folder:
id1\music <sndtrk_q1.zip>
hipnotic\music <sndtrk_q1_exp1.zip>
rogue\music <sndtrk_q1_exp2.zip>

Go back into your main Quake folder:
Rename the file "Glquake.exe" to "Glquake.exe.bak"
Rename the file "quakespasm.exe" to "Glquake.exe"

You may now use your Quake shortcuts, or Galaxy to launch your game of choice.

Run each game/expansion and setup your controls and video, check if the music plays. Have fun!

Quake 2

Download Yamagi Quake II (quake2-7.40.zip)
webpage
file download

Explore your Quake 2 folder and delete these files:

3.20_Changes.txt
quake2.exe
ref_gl.dll
ref_soft.dll
baseq2\gamex86.dll
baseq2\maps.lst
ctf\ctf2.ico
ctf\gamex86.dll
ctf\readme.txt
ctf\server.cfg
xatrix\gamex86.dll
rogue\gamex86.dll

xatrix\music <sndtrk_q2_exp2.zip>

** These are the highest quality .ogg files (Quality 10). They are sourced from "accurate rip" flac files. They are higher quality than the .ogg files provided by GOG, and I have included "The Reckoning" files as well. If Yamagi Quake II is ever updated to support .flac, those files can be found here.

Bonus, if you're really picky.

This is a pack that fixes the mastering error "click" at the beginning of "Operation Overlord" (AKA Quake 2 Track 02, and The Reckoning Track 07). I've included separate fixes for both tracks, in both .flac and .ogg format. Can we say "OCD" boys and girls?
Big thx, works exactly as promised :) Quake and Quake II without the original sound track is such a loss. 23 years on and still enjoying Quake, top job...

Oops, nothing to see here.

Thank you! Quake just isn't the same without Trent Reznor. You are a saint!
