Since nothing is mentioned here about CD music I'll take the initiative.

In the console ( ` ), the player can presumably look at the song playing (cd info). This will display whether or not the music is playing or looping and the track number. Up through Quake v1.09 (GOG retail), the 'cd loop X' command simply does not work, not when attempted manually and it does not work when the 'cd info' command says that the given track is looping. From what I have read the reason for this is based wholly on something that WIndows Vista and later operating systems do to MCI (Media Control Interface). Unfortunately, this issue cannot be fixed client-side and will require some 3rd-party solution or other to see a genuine fix. For players that prefer not to patch their games, for whatever reason, this will present an issue.

What I have taken to doing when playing with a CD is manually changing the music. If I want to play the same song that started with the level I must switch to a different song and then back to it, i.e. 'cd play X', 'cd play Y'. When I want to repeat the same song when it is finished I can either repeat that same process or reset the cd and then choose the track, i.e. 'cd reset', 'cd track Y'. This is remarkably frustrating and does something to further mar the ambiance damaged by the lack of music.

Just tried Yamagi Quake II (finally got to it), but I can't seem to get the music working. Already moved the music folder from the root to the baseq2 folder, but nothing happens. Am I missing something?

Also, if I eventually get the music to work, does anyone know which tracks belong to which expansion? GOG just numbered them from 02-21. At least one of the expansions had unique music, right?

Lastly, the brightness looks different compared to vanilla Q2, the 1st level looks much brighter. Also the textures (immediately evident on the handgun) look more dithered. Whether or not this is a good thing is debatable, but is there a way to get this closer to the original?

Thanks!

The files in the baseq2 music folder should be named 02.ogg through 11.ogg. Sorry, I don't know how gog named them. The expansions have ten music tracks as well.

I think both expansions have five new tracks each. I'm sorry, I can't help you right now. Maybe I can figure out a mapping of gog track numbers to real track numbers on the weekend, but I can't promise you that I'll get around to it.

Sorry, I've no idea about that. It's been a really long time since I've used the original executable. At least ten years. But I remember reading something about this on the github issue page.

What gl_texturemode do you use?

Did you enable "OGG music" in the options menu?

If so, check the console for any messages that include "Ogg Vorbis" or "OGG" ... might be some hints there.

Ah, yes, it says '09 not in the list'. Renamed GOG's Track##.ogg to ##.ogg and now it works. Great!

Any idea on how the tracks should be divided between base game and expansion packs?
The tracks for an expansion would go into a "music" subfolder of that expansion folder, and would start with 02.ogg there.

Tracks 02-11 are for the original campaign, so if you have a track 12 I guess that is really track 02 of one of the expansions? So the question is, which expansion, and how many tracks are for that expansion vs. for the other one.

Just checking on YouTube it looks like mk47at is right: each expansion has 5 tracks. So tracks 12-16 should be 02-06 for one expansion, and tracks 17-21 should be 02-06 for the other expansion. You can also check YouTube to verify which is which, e.g. you could check out what The Reckoning's first track ("Gravity Well") sounds like and see if that matches up with your track 12 or track 17.

Sorry I can't be more specific. :-) I'm not at home at the moment, and I don't have the Q2 expansions currently installed anyway.

No, this is great info, I'll puzzle the correct sets together, thanks! Will post the supposedly correct grouping later on for posterity.

GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST according to config.cfg in baseq2. Not sure if both Quake2.exe and Yamagi Quake use this file? If so, running the original .exe shows smoother textures than via Yamagi's.

According to the readme, the config file is in the documents folder:
…\Documents\YamagiQ2\baseq2\config.cfg

Got it. Also GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST though.
*edit: thought to have sorted out the music, but Ground Zero is still off....

Initially indeed seemed like first 10 tracks were baseq2, next 5 xatrix (Reckoning), last 5 rogue (Ground Zero), which would make sense. Seemed ok at first, first level of The Reckoning matched, but the level 1 track that plays in Ground Zero does not match what I found on YouTube. :S

Wikipedia mentions each expansion featured 5 *new* tracks, but I imagine it could also be possible the discs still contained 10 tracks each, reusing 5 old tracks?

Right, that would be too easy. Some music tracks were copies of the old ones. They had to do it this way, because you didn't have to switch cds.

I still haven't got any informations about the gog tracks, but I've written a quick program that orders the tracks by their length and listened to the files in the order (my files are separate cd rips, therefore utomatic matching by binary comparison was impossible). The results are in the attached png file. Files that are on the same line contain the same music.

It's a first step.

Edit: They are ordered by their length. Shortest to longest.

Well one thing to keep in mind is that the tracks won't be played in order... the first level of the missionpack, for example, doesn't necessarily use the first music track from the missionpack's disc. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

edit: sounds like mk47at is saying something more useful...

Just to be sure, each of your expansion folders does indeed have 10 tracks in it / your original rips had 10 tracks each?

*edit: if you can tell me how to do the same, I can order the GOG tracks the same way, but that would only work if GOG used the same CDs you had (Quake 1 varies between versions as well) and there are no tracks of equal length... also seems like your screen capture is cropped / tracks are missing?

Only other thing I can think of is comparing spectro's, or hunt down a slightly less than legal download and compare by ear.

No tracks are missing. There are tweny lines (i.e. twenty unique tracks) that list thirty files.

While the cds may be different, I assume that all different versions are essentially the same (minus different length of silence, track gap and the length of the data track). Concerning the different Quake 1 cds: I know that the starting positions for the second track (and subsequently all other tracks) vary, because the data track has different lengths.

As you use Windows and would have to download lots of stuff that makes my program work, I think the easiest way for you to proceed would be either to wait until I get the gog version or to open each file with a media player, write down the length and sort them by length and match them to my picture.
