I just started playing Quake 1 for the first time.
I guess I entered the first secret area? Low grav level.

My mind was blown.

Maybe I just haven't played enough shooters in general, but that was sick. It started the level with me freefalling from real high, so I thought I was just gonna die, but I didn't. Then i jumped lol.

I can't imagine what people thought in 1996 when they got to that level.

I'm still super early in the game, but I'm pretty excited.
Should I pick up Quake 2? I was thinking of playing some mods like Arcane Dimensions after I beat this one.

I would go with Arcane Dimensions. Quake 2 is a good game but it looks and plays very different from the first one. Not everyones cup of tea.

Thanks for the feedback.
I've read that Quake 2 is much more slow paced and story driven, which reminds me of Unreal. Would you say that's accurate? I enjoyed Unreal, but I definitely enjoyed Duke3D and so far Quake much more. I guess I'd rather have less talk more shoot.

Other games I plan on buying/playing.
- Blood
- Dusk
- Prodeus
- Wrath
- FEAR 1, I read that 2 was meh.

Ion Maiden and Shadow Warrior are a maybe, but the build engine graphics give me a headache. I'm hoping the 3D view in the new Blood helps with that.

Lemme know what you think.

I wouldn't say Quake 2 is a slow game. You can still do strafe jumping etc. in that one. There's also not much of a story. You are a space marine and you crash with your ship on the Strogg planet and have to get out of there. The theme of Q 2 is more sci-fi with cyborgs. I enjoyed playing it when I did but it didn't outdo Quake 1 for me.

As for the other games you listed: DUSK is fantastic. It was my favorite fps of 2018. I highly recommend getting it when it's available. Same goes for AMID EVIL, which is from the same publisher as DUSK. Blood is also a fantastic game and with the new Fresh Supply remaster from NIght Dive it plays absolutely great (mouselook never felt better). It has always been my favorite build engine fps. F.E.A.R. 1 is also very recommended as the combat is a lot of fun and F.E.A.R. 2 is also not as bad as people say it is. I enjoyed playing that one too. Again not as good as the first game but far away from being a really bad game.

When it comes to new games I for sure want to play Prodeus and Wrath. Wrath even more because it's in the vein of Quake and Quake is my all time favorite. Ion Maiden and Shadow Warrior are both already in my GOG collection. The preview of Ion Maiden was great and I can't wait to play the full thing. Shadow Warrior plays ok with the Redux version (the mouse sensivity needs some manual configuration here and there). A hard game though (like all of the build engine fps).

You've convinced me to give Quake 2 a chance lol. Just looking at the levels and expansions, there's so much content.

I'll hold my horses for the Build games though. I already have enough to satisfy my shooter needs without worrying about motion sickness.

I'd like to get Amid Evil, but it might be a bit too graphics intensive.

Let's hope we see the newer FPSes release here soon.

Have you tried Devil Daggers?

Between Quake 2 and a game like Blood I would choose Blood at any time. Especially with the remastered version that is available which has a 3D view option and also an fov slider. You can also turn off head bobbing and weapon bobbing if you want. So motion sickness is not really a problem with Blood: Fresh Supply.

I overplayed that game until it started to piss me off more than being actual fun. For what it wants to be it's absolutely perfect but it was just too hard for me at some point. I tried many times but I realised I won't be able to get past that one part and so I stopped playing it. Not sure if I ever will play it again.
Quake 2 is so monotonous... literally. Everything is just brown corridors. The level design is bland, the enemies get old fast, the story is completely superfluous. Music is ok, but not that great. The first one was so much better in every aspect (ok, not the story, but it had much cooler and more varied levels and enemies). Weapons are ok for the most part, I guess, but far from spectacular. Standard id arsenal.

However, I am currently playing "The Reckoning", and yes, everything is still brown for the most part, but the level design is much, much better than in the main game in my opinion. Levels are actually interesting to explore and have distinct features that make them memorable. There are even some new weapons and enemies to spice things up a bit.
