If like me, you have fond memories of playing this on your PS2 and want to revisit them with modern(ish) hardware, fear not I have the solution! I initially contacted GOG Support who told me "Project Eden" wouldn't run on my PC, which uses Windows 10 64 Bit. Which I was dubbious about as the game runs on an early version of "The Angel of Darkness" engine and that runs perfectly on my PC, which is a GPD Win. So my solution was to download the DxWnd application set Direct X to 8 and rename the intro move (in the Movies folder from Logos to NotLogos) which was causing the program to hang. I then ran the "Project Eden".exe via DxWnd (which you can find with a simple Google search) and it runs pefectly! This is also why I have zero playtime of this game on my profile. You can change resolution etc with no problems. I've only played the game for a few hours at this point but if I come across any bugs I'll add them here at a later date!

Sorry to Necro this post, but, I have been playing Project Eden just fine on my Windows 10, 64-bit OS and just today, seemingly randomly, I started getting this issue.

I'm not able to run it using DxWnd for some reason, it simply doesn't open when I click run. Weird issue.
It is hard to diagnose. Do you have a black screen before the error message, or literally nothing? Have you been installing updates recently, especially GPU updates? Maybe your drivers have an issue with DirectX 8. If that is the case, there is a wrapper you can try, click on d3d8.dll in the Assets section to download that file, then put it in the same folder where Eden.exe is (usually in C:\GOG Games\Project Eden). Then try to run the game. This will 'convert' the GPU calls from DirectX 8 to DirectX 9 and might solve your issue.

Heya. I do get a black screen, yeah. It starts as a small black window, seems like it tries to go fullscreen, hangs a second, then I get the error. Here is what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8Z8IsQylXQ

Per GPU updates, I don't honestly think so. I'm running Windows 10, 64-bit, and my GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770, which no longer gets updates. I've been running Project Eden more or less without any issues, save for the mouse latency issue, which I was able to work around through changing some windows mouse sensitivity settings and maxing in-game sensitivity. But this is a first.

It did occur after a regular windows update, I believe. Hard to tell what's changed though.

Holy smokes, your suggestion worked! Putting d3d8.dll into the game folder did it. Works like a charm now!

Thank you so much!
You're welcome :)
