Bhaldur: I've played BGII and it was fun.
I've played FalloutII (thanks to gog) recently and it was fun.

But PST... that's just... boring. One long unimportant dialog after another. Normally, I like to scout everything and speak with everyone. But now, I'm thinking of speeding through the game and not wasting time with all this "non main story npcs".

I'm really suprised, that an RPG could bore me. I mean, I can read for days if a book is that good. (And often do). And as I said, love other classic RPGs. But PST? Neither are this "dialogs" interesting, nor is the action exciting. What a pitty (for me).

Grml. That cant be it. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for such a game right now.
To be honest I've had to restart PST around three times over the years until I finally found the time it really clicked with me, which is right now. The game is incredibly engrossing once you start really getting into it. Some of the characters do have a lot to say (looking at you Cadrian Illborne) but the information they give truly shapes the world around you. My only suggestion is to try the game again at a later time, it's so unbelieveably worth it once you devote the time to it.
I just got it today (vanilla GOG version) and have to say I'm struggling already just with the controls. Why doesn't right clicking just attack for instance. The wheels that come up are less that intuitive. But a good podcast (weekend confirmed) told me the game was awesome so i really hope these issues don't stop me playing more...!

Well you can ... Left-click to attack you know. I actually love the wheel interface, I never could get used to keyboard shortcuts in BG games
Still not getting into it. :(
Have left Pharod (this collector boss) behind me... and yes, there are some very funny and interesting dialogs but overall, its just to mutch pointless reading.

Bought Arcanum right now... hopefully its more like bg2 or f2.

Well the game certainly isn't for everyone. Arcanum, however, is like F2 with a ... different setting. It's lots of fun.

Meh, the wheel is really cumbersome if you're a Mage.
I never found it that bad, but can't you make hotkeys if you wanted?
If you're finding the game boring because of lack of quests, don't worry, after you exit the Mortuary, there'll be a lot of quests for you to do! But if you're getting tired of reading so much text, unfortunately this game isn't for you.

JohnLB: I am in the mortuary and having trouble finding motivation to find my way out.
What? I found mortuary very amusing :-). Very good introduction to game in my opinion.

The wheel is kind of cumbersome. Later on, combat requires a LOT of micromanagement. But the game itself is well-worth playing. You will die a lot on the two bosses (three if you have to "fight" TTO...)
The thing with PS:T is that while it takes place in a fantasy setting, there are no other fantasy games to effectively compare it to, other than to say that its like BG2 but with alot less fighting and way more dialogue.

Thus the only way to enjoy this game experience is if you really want to roleplay (as this IS a cRPG) the Nameless One's quests.

Or to approach this game as you would some of the adventure games on gog.com here, but in a fantasy setting.

If either approach isn't what you're looking for in a gaming experience, then perhaps its best to put this game away for now, and get back to it when you're desirous to play a game that's not super combat-heavy, but very heavy in story, as some other posters reccomended.
OK. If you want this to be good, you need to be invested in what is happening in the story. If you just want to kill monsters, you have spent $10 on something you won't like.

The beauty of the game is in NOT killing things/people; the beauty lies in the plot, characters, and dialogue, elements almost entirely absent in most games.

In my eyes PS:T is absolutely perfect. And I was immediately drawn into what was happening. The fact that I could find some other way to finish the game that did not include fighting TTO impressed me immeasurably, and the solution undertaken was brilliant.

In fact, I would venture to say that elements of plot, characters, and dialogue are the primary reason to play RPGs in the first place, whether they are Western or Japanese. If you just want to kill monsters, go play Duke Nukem.
First let me apologize for upping a thread with the previous post made more than a year ago.

I've now restarted the game three times, but I just can't seem to be able to keep my interest up. Like others have noted in this thread, there is too much pointless conversation. I don't know what's wrong with me, since I like to read and I especially got this game because the setting was interesting. Everyone (well, almost) is talking how incredible the plot of the game is.

The main plot seems interesting, along with a few interesting dialogues occasionally, but for the most part the dialogue is boring. Sometimes the dialogue reminds me of texts by Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman with its originality, but this happens too rarely.

Will I miss much if I just concentrate on the main plot and ignore most of the side quests? This time I made a mage with high int, wis and cha because I thougt it would bring something new to the dialogues, but so far I'm still struggling to continue.

yes to be honest.

I first got this game when it released and I must have been about 15 at the time. Honestly, just like the OP, the game just bored me and I really struggled to get outside of the mortuary. And even when I did the initial area just didn't hold my interest at all. I left it for 4 or 5 years and came back to try again with more time and less ADD I guess ;). I'm glad I did because after finishing it, it is possibly the best game I have ever played. There is a point in the game when the story grips like nothing else, and the writing and characters are second to none. it probably took me until finding Pharod or around that point. It does start slow but definitely stick with it and talk to your party every once in a while.

Neilus1: yes to be honest.
Thanks for replying. I haven't had time to play much lately so I'm still in the very beginning. I decided to play the game in short sessions in order to not to get bored so easily, and also lowered the difficulty to easy (I hope the game doesn't punish me for this) to make the repetitive fights shorter.

I'll definitely finish the game this time and hope it'll pique my interest at some point.
